Still in the midst of Covid-19, just finding an ‘open’ sign can be a major victory. After a long motorcycle ride I was hoping for two things: a hot cup of decent coffee, and a homemade doughnut. Masking up, I read the COVID-19 instructions on the front door - which seemed reasonable - and entered the Looney Moose. I asked the young lady behind the counter whether they took plastic, she said they did, and I ordered coffee and a doughnut. Per the friendly, bearded gentleman who I assume ran the place, he mentioned he had one single donut left; would I like that plan or sugared? I asked for it plain and my coffee black, paid, and went outside to enjoy my find at the conveniently located picnic tables directly outside the front door. The coffee was fine, and the donut... Amazing. It was crispy on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside, and left that light patina of oil on your fingertips which is the hallmark of a real, old-fashioned, home cooked doughnut.
I really enjoy simple things done well. You can’t get much more simple than a plain doughnut, yet this was as good as any I’ve had in recent memory.

Read moreHello my American friends. I visited the Looney Moose with my daughter for the first time when I was driving her from our home in Ottawa Canada to university in Nova Scotia. We crossed through your beautiful state, Maine, where we stopped for lunch at the Looney Moose, and then spent the night in Bar Harbor. For the record, I had the gobbler sandwich at the Looney Moose, which I highly recommend. Before departing for Nova Scotia, we hiked up Cadillac Mountain, and enjoyed the beautiful view from up top.
This is not so much a restaurant review, though I enjoyed the Looney Moose, as it is a reach out in friendship. Even though there’s so much craziness at the political level now, please know that as Canadians, we don’t harbour any ill will against Americans. Please feel free to come on up for a visit sometime, you’ll always be...
Read moreWe went in for a late lunch in late August. It was empty save for one couple who left soon after we arrived. It's a small, cozy but worn-out building. All was okay until we found a long blonde hair in one of our sandwiches. The waitress declared to us (now empty room) that she will not charge us for it since we are going to eat it and not ask for a new one. When I went to pay for lunch, it was higher than expected. When I asked her if she's charging me for the sandwich, she looked at me like I was crazy for not paying for it. My teen girls were just watching to see what I'd do. I decided to pay and leave quietly since there were other customers by then. She was young, maybe a bit scatterbrained. This was our last American dining experience before we crossed the border. It's a small diner, but some professionalism would...
