Java Hutt was awful. I asked to use the restroom, they told me both restrooms were occupied (men’s and women’s), so I stood outside the restrooms waiting. After a while I knocked on both, it seemed like they were vacant, just locked.
I returned to the cash and asked for the key, I was again told the women’s restroom was occupied. I asked for the key for the men’s restroom. After a bunch of back and fourth I was finally given the key. When I was exiting the restroom I saw them hand the key for the women’s restroom to someone who had just walked in and hadn’t paid for anything or ordered. I stayed to watch that person leave without buying anything. When I confronted the owner and asked why they had refused to let me use the restroom, but they had let someone who was not even a customer use the restroom, the owner pretended they hadn’t refused me access.
I’m trans and this business is in a supposedly LGBTQ+ friendly area, they should find a different neighborhood to operate in if they hate trans people and are so uncomfortable with them using their facilities. The coffee was...
Read moreI have lived in the Pacific Northwest where I enjoyed amazing coffee at every turn. This place doesn't serve that coffee, but it is one of the best coffee shops I have ever known, with a genuine sense of community. The staff are usually busy but always helpful, and often fun and totally genuine. They have gone out of their way to help me with many things that are not on your traditional list of coffee shop services (change every other day for the bus, giving an envelope to a colleague who hasn't shown up yet). Yes, down the street Red Hook has pdx roasted coffee, a rotating array of gourmet baked goods, and the ever hip just-short-of-enough-seating to make you feel super cool if you get to sit down. And it's great for what it is. But Java Hutt is a comfortable and spacious place to work with amazing hours, amazing staff, the local flavor and cast of Ferndale characters. They are incomparable and I am grateful for them. They also make their own GF, vegan cookies, if...
Read moreIt's an adorable little cafe with WiFi, coffee (and bubble tea!), and a small menu of grilled sandwiches. I would've absolutely given them five stars if my sandwich were any good. It absolutely got the job done (being my hunger), but it wasn't actually very good. I had the ham and cheddar press with tomato and had to take the tomato off. Something tasted strange about it. Maybe it needed extra seasoning? Black pepper? The cheese was also pretty bland and the ham was disappointing. My iced coffee and bubble tea were great though! And the barista was very sweet and friendly! I would maybe work on that food menu though. Maybe make the items a little bit more unique instead of just the run of the mill thoroughfare every little coffee shop in the country has...maybe better quality...
