We ordered delivery tonight from Hop Haus, and... unfortunately, I cannot recommend it.
We got pretzel bites, the signature Hop Haus sandwich/burger, and the Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich.
All told, before tax and tip, we spent $42.
The burger was ok. Nothing special, but cooked to medium as ordered. There was a bit of horseradish sauce underneath it, very little of the beer simmered onions, and the burger itself had no seasoning or flavor to speak of. The fries, sadly, were undercooked.
My wife's chicken sandwich was on the other hand slightly burned, and, well... small. Somewhere between a slider and a regular fast food chicken sandwich. It also cost $16. She said the chicken itself, underneath the slightly seared breading, was good.
The pretzel bites though, yeesh. These cost $10. They arrived both burnt and cold, even though the rest of the food was still warm, which suggests they sat out quite a bit. The cheese sauce was cold and lumpy. There were 11 of them total, which means each of these postage stamp sized things was 90 cents.
I really don't know what to say. Hop Haus is trying, the orders are accurate at least, and I love their beer, but for now at least, I'd say give delivery a miss.
Update: Per Hop Haus' response, the food is indeed more expensive when ordered for delivery. (Pretzel bites cost 2 more dollars, and each sandwich cost s;lightly over 3. We paid nothing for delivery itself and the usual sales tax).
I'm... not sure that $13 for a burnt chicken sandwich or $8 for the sad pretzel bites we got is significantly better, but I'll leave that up to Google users, they can judge for themselves.
I will also note that the 'upcharges' for Hop Haus through the same service (Eatstreet, in my case) seem to be significantly higher than other restaurants we've been frequenting. Hop Haus's upcharges in our case were $2 for the appetizer and $3+ for entrees. Looking over my recent deliveries and comparing them to ordering directly from the restaurants, the average upcharge seems to be more like $1-1.50 for entrees and as low as 50 cents for appetizers elsewhere, and yes, I'm comparing to local establishments, in the interest of fairness. I have no idea who makes these pricing choices, but it only adds to the cost disparity if you're ordering for delivery...
Read moreDo you like IPAs, horrible service, and mediocre food? Those are the questions you should ask yourself before visiting Hop Haus' Fitchburg location.
Usually there a few non-IPA beers that are good on the menu, and some surprisingly good mixed drinks. However, past that, I can't think of anything else positive.
I've been here a total of four times, twice for just drinks (on the more expensive side, but good beers and cocktails), and I've eaten here twice.
The food is mediocre and bad value, over $10 for a Mac and cheese? Over $10 for a single 3" diameter burger? These things can be forgiven if the food is good. Readers, the food is not good. It is mediocre at best. My first time I had the burger, it was tiny, and barely tasted of meat under all the questionable toppings, the Mac and cheese tasted of Velveeta and sadness. We ordered truffle fries, because the serving sizes were so small, I didn't expect over a tablespoon of oil left in the basket from the fries.
Service was great, once. Two times it was ok, and most recently it was trash. The waitress ignored our table almost completely. We tried waiving her down, but she was too interested in talking to other employees to actually serve our table. One of the members of our table didn't receive his food till long after the rest of us, and they tried to charge use twice for his meal. I say "us" because we had to send our check back three times because it was incorrect (we were in a group that explicitly stated up front we'd need split checks). It included extra meals and extra drinks, after the third time we eventually paid an incorrect check just to end it.
I don't think we'll be coming here again, after funk's closed we wanted a close by place to grab drinks and food after work but this is...
Read more7 of us for a bite: My wife is a Chicken wings connoisseur, these were meh at best. Brother had Mac n Cheese, he said meh. 2 of 3 kids had grilled cheese...meh...(how you make a "meh" grilled cheese is past me). 1 other kid had the saddest looking burger I've seen in awhile...but that only lasted 4 seconds until I saw my sister-in- laws burger...truly pathetic. A bun with a lump of meat on it. ZERO anything else. I ordered curry rice as per the menu: "Seasonal vegetables, house made yellow curry, served over jasmine rice, cilanto & pistachios."
Rice, yes...a $12 pile of it with curry. As for the seasonal vegetables..you know the stuff you sweep into the sink after you cut up broccoli....THAT and a few slices of carrot was basically the seasonal vegetables along with the 3 leaves of cilantro. I sent that back and had 2 beers for dinner. (why one would order curry at a brew pub you ask? The short of it: It was tactical. It was the cheapest thing on the menu in a place I figured was going to yield the results it did.
Outcome was going home and making my own $1 worth of grilled cheese and ramen noodles that, and I'm not joking, was superior to ANYTHING we ordered here. Add this to the endless list of places that spend millions to erect pretty nice accommodations and then have unacceptable grilled cheese and hamburgers. . Seriously, save the time and overhead on the kitchen and just have bar pizzas. Side note: I find it very laughable that places that can spend 4 mil on a facility w/ questionable food are now all charging 3% for...
