I really, really enjoy this place. I've been coming here for my girlfriend's work Christmas party for the past two years, and I have absolutely no complaints. This is your classic, in the middle of a bunch of neighborhoods, local bar kind of hole-in-the-wall gem that you will never accidently find. You'll only come here if you're told to come here by a friend. Well, I'm that friend.
The staff are about the nicest folk you'll ever meet. Nothing about them overtly strikes me as German, but that doesn't matter. With every entree, you get bread, soft and supple, and your choice of a soup of salad, or both. The soup I've had both years was a beef soup, which was rich and deep with flavor, along with a nice amount of veggies. I barely even use a spoon with this. I just go in for the slurps.
Now, the salad is very interesting. It's literally slices of tomatoes and cucumbers all thrown around on each other on a plate and slathered with some sort of creamy-ish dressing. It's very rustic and simple and delicious. Use that bread to sop of the rest of the remaining dressing on the plate.
The entrees also come with either a baked potato or German fried potatoes. Pro-tip, listen to me now, order the fried potatoes, and ask them to make them extra crispy for you. You have not had better potatoes in the last year, I promise you. I wanted to order more just to-go so I could take them home. I was really impressed here.
Now, for the entrees themselves, I love schnitzel. And if you shop at Aldi, you might love schnitzel, too. So I asked which is the best one, and my friendly server suggested the Kase Schnitzel (Pan-fried until Golden Brown, topped with a three-cheese sauce). I've never had a schnitzel covered in cheese before, but I was down for anything.
So the schnitzel they serve is massive, which is usually a sign of a restaurant that prioritizes quantity of quality, but that's not the vibe I was getting here. They took their quality meat, pounded it out very effectively, and fried it beautifully. The inside was not dry, the outside was crispy and well seasoned, and the cheese on top was actually very welcome. They didn't just throw Kraft singles on top. It was a nice, subtle compliment to the plate.
I also got to sample the Wiener Schnitzel (A great Austrian favorite" Pan-fried until golden brown. Served with German Potatoes & Red Cabbage). Same great dish, minus cheese, add red cabbage. It was solid red cabbage. If you like red cabbage, you'll like it. If you don't like red cabbage, start, because you'll need this freshness and acidity to cut through the heavy rest of the meal.
Overall, this place is truly a diamond in the rough. If you're reading this and are even a little bit interested, please come here....
Read moreFrom the outside it doesn't look like much, and the bar in the front seemed like just another bar. Once in the dining room, however, it was like being in a friend's dining room, and the wait staff treated us like part of the family. We were greeted by Emmy herself as we came in. It's very tight, there's a lot of tables packed in, but it encourages the feeling of a big family dinner, where you're catching up with friends or relatives you haven't seen in a while. The first thing I noticed was that the items are a bit pricey for my taste, but the friends I was with quickly assured me it was worth it. They were right! The food was delicious and big portions. I had the veal jager schnitzel, which when it arrived covered the plate! First though was the delicious loaves of bread, a wonderful soup with a very tasty broth perfect for dipping the bread into, and then a German salad - a sort of cole slaw made with vinegar based sauce and topped with slices of cucumbers. (It comes with tomatoes as well, but I don't eat them and they held them off) the schnitzel came with red cabbage and German potatoes. The red cabbage was again delicious, with a nice vinegar flavor, but sweet at the same time. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and fried crispy. The veal schnitzel came with a mushroom gravy that was perfect on it and the potatoes. The veal was tender and the light breading crisp and tasty. The service was excellent and they met our every need. Glasses stayed filled, they were helpful in ordering, and made us feel at home. On asking for a to go box, I found an extra scoop of the German salad I had enjoyed so much tucked in and after eating my fill I still had enough for a wonderful lunch...
Read moreI had a wonderful time eating at Emmy’s. This restaurant has excellent food and great fast service. It has a German/American menu averaging 18-25 per person and is well worth it. It was divided inside into bar area/band -dance floor area/cozy dining area. I can go on and on about the interesting and quality food choices which are very authentic German but well described in English making it hard to spell for me but very easy to order. Because of spelling problem instead I would encourage you to look at the pics in many reviews. I love quality food but this was much more than that. It was a food experience brought to you by Emmy herself while came to America from Germany at y17 years of age. She was married to a military special forces veteran. She is a warm and friendly woman who still happily works very hard to ensure a fun, friendly, and family atmosphere. It was a pleasure to meet at chat with Emmy who is 80 years old and has been in business at least 43 years. She herself only seems to be in her 40’s. The band was there playing upbeat German music and some couples were dancing authentic German dance. Entertaining and fun. The waitstaff was amazingly quick, efficient, and appropriately in German clothes. Emmy’s is definitely a local favorite as well as award winning. Year after year of awards line their walls. Out side the lot was full and it looks like a tavern. Don’t make the mistake a judging a book by it’s cover or you’ll miss out on this precious German dining experience. I would recommend going while band and Emmy are there. Her son works there as well. Much respect to your great food and great dining experience. Please hit like if this is helpful to...
