Food Fun Adventure Saturday took Fat Man Reviews to Mami Monchitas in Frankfort, KY. This spot is a local family owned Honduran Restaurant that serves authentic Honduran food.
We started with Anafres, this is refried beans, chorizo and Honduran quesillo it was plated on a clay pot. The beans were not overwhelming, the cheese was melted well, and the chips were crunchy. I also tried a House margarita, it was a decent drink, and it tasted like it had fresh lime juice. We also tried a Port Royal Honduran beer it had a good pilsner taste with a slight hop bite on the end.
Another appetizer we tried was the Nacho dip with Plantain chips. This was good as well, but cheese dip was a little thin. The chips were crispy and slightly sweet.
My entrée was the Tacos de Pollo. Chicken tacos deep-fried taquito style covered in shredded cabbage, Honduran cheese, homemade Criollo and a pueblo sauce. This was a delicious dish, the tacos were crunchy, the vinegar from the cabbage cut the saltiness of the cheese and the sauce pulled it altogether. We also tried the Yuca frita. They were fried just right and the dipping sauce was great.
My fiancé tried the Pupusas stuffed with Quesillo. They were griddle cakes that came with pueblo salsa, cabbage, cilantro and pickled onions. They had a little crunch from the cook and when adding the accompaniments added to the savory taste.
A member of our party tried the Baleadas. These were flour tortillas stuffed with refried beans, chorizo and eggs. I sampled the dish, and it was cooked well and had some good flavor, but it was very salty. A hot sauce or some acid would have helped cut through the saltiness.
Mami Monchitas menu has both meat and vegetarian offerings as well as a full bar. I was surprised that the food was not spicier, which I think people will really enjoy. The service was good, and the entire experience was enjoyable. The Fat Man says that Mami Monchitas is Fat...
Read moreDidn't even take pictures, we were too eager to dig in. We ordered the Anafres appetizer, which for our budget was a little high for an appetizer, but it was absolutely worth it, because it was bubbling hot with the meltiest cheese and the best beans and chorizo we've ever tasted.
My Partner ordered chorizo papusas dinner combo with casamiento (rice & red beans cooked in coconut milk), sweet plantains, and guisados beans (red beans & green peppers in yummy broth). It was also served with a bowl of shredded and pickled cabbage.
I ordered the jalapeno shrimp in white wine sauce, which comes with sweet plantains guisados beans, and chismol (Honduran pico).
We also split a mojito, which was full of fresh mint, lime, and mulled cane sugar.
The plantains, shrimp, and mojito were also the best we'd ever tasted, and the new things we tried were even better. My Partner was very happy with his first ever papusas, and that jalapeno white wine sauce on my shrimp dish? Run don't walk!
We saw the filet mignon with chimichurri come out to another customer, and it looked like a million bucks.
But all said and done, it was even cheaper than our favorite Cuban place in Louisville. We were over the moon with the food, the sweet smiles of everyone who served us, and the mission of Mami Mochita. A new...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing restaurant with a joy filled staff, an food that will have you ordering more as your unfinished plate sits in front of you. The live music (that was there the Saturday night in June) was perfectly in tune and played many different songs the entire time I was there. A hostess and waiter started to dance together once the two gentlemen playing guitars and singing. There was also a lone maraca on our table (of 6, 4 adults 2 children) an we took turns passing it around and playing with the beat. Not long before we left two customers stood up and slow danced to Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight song played by the live artists. It's passed small mountains and slightly curving roads in Frankfort Ky, an worth the drive made from Indiana to this place specifically (about an hour am fifteen minutes away from my home) and it did not disappoint. I also met one of the owners that commented on the best choice of meat I had on my plate and he was so right. It's a unique atmosphere where family, friends, lovers or strangers can hang out in a positive filled building. Surrounded by delicious cuisine, dimly lit areas that set the mood and bright colors that cover the walls making you want to move. I highly recommend this establishment and I will...
