Not as great as it was a few years ago but the pizza trade has a high turnover in pizza making.
Originally, it was a well made balanced Italian tradition pizza. Right now, Ciao is still better than most in this area but it's Americanized & needs a little improvement.
I'm from the New York area -- the only 2 pizzerias that had magic in their recipe was Ciao & Hackettstown's Pronto.
Ciao fell a few notches in the last few years. At times, it's a floppy slice, cheese runs together in a lava flow.
Perfect pizza test...you hold the slice up with one hand & only the tip dips. Not the entire slice. You don't need to fold it to eat it & prevent the cheese from running down into your plate & off the slice. The earlier Ciao slice had this quality.
Look under the pizza slice or in the box if delivering -- no oil stain. None. The only oil that is acceptable is a pepperoni pie because that causes a greasy pie. It's all about balance of cheese & tomato sauce. Apply liberally, not splash & spread. Ciao had it perfect years ago.
However, the Ciao slice still has good flavor, not chewy. Still one of the better pies in the area. That's why I have faith & continue to drop in. It's never a disappointment.
The best slice I ever had was on Carmine Street in NYC. They must have been good. Their lunch line went out the door & around Bleecker Street every lunch day. Standing room only.
Those pizza slice eating people in Greenwich Village are discriminating. There are many pizza parlors in that area -- competition is stiff. I think they put sugar in their tomato sauce...that's cheating.
But it was heavenly good. Could eat 5 slices alone. Ciao could...
Read moreThe 5th time in a row the food has been terrible. I know, I know... why continue with this place if that is the case and the reason is simple, it's the closest place that will deliver. Well, I've promised myself that it's over, never again, and I'll drive 6 miles to the next pizza shop. Not only does the food arrive late and cold... but the quality the past year or so has been so sub par... this I know -- they "do not" use fresh ingredients. Getting hard to tell just who is who as this place has exchanged hands a few times... they are VERY careful not to disclose this information, but the original Ciao is all but a distant memory. What once were wonderful large 2.5 inch meatballs are now puny 1.25 and mostly freezer burnt as is their sausage... their sauce is close to tasteless and I dare anyone to find a dish with a vegetable not smothered in butter and oil. To add insult, their prices have risen to a level out of line with all others in the nearest communities. Do yourself a favor and drive into Washington (Enzo's) or Phillipsburg (Frank's) when you need...
Read moreAfter many years of ordering and eating from Ciao, we are done. The quality and service has dropped off just too much. The last 3 times we ordered were all bad. #1 order totally wrong order only thing right was salad. #2 order long wait time and the sauce tasted like it wasn't even cooked. It was canned tasting. Most recent, ordered... told 40 min went into pick up at about 45-50min. Was handed the order, I said where is the pizza part of the order. They never made it. They scrambled to throw a pizza together and apparently just left my food on a counter in the back so it was completely cold. When I complained the 2 girls at the front just stared at me. So I gathered my cold food and pizza to leave the owner shouted out of the back he would discount my check. No discount ever applied to the check. Sorry but we are a once to twice a week family for the restaurant. Guess we are going back to Enzo's which is sad the food is bad but at...
