Ordered a combo plate with "Tri-tip", they were out of Tri-tip. Ordered Pork Loin instead, thwy were out of this, too at 3pm in the afternoon on a Saturday. Ended up with marbled Brisket, Sausage, and Pork ribs.
The checker at the register offered beans with my meal. Instead of having a line attendant serve the beans, the checker served food. Yes, the guy handling people's dirty money during this lovely COVID-19 pandemic is handling food, too. The checker didn't even change gloves, yet I'm required to wear a mask?
While bagging the cookies I requested with our meal, the checker dropped the handle of the tongs into the cup of beans he just served me. Seeing this, the checker began wiping the beans off the handle OVER MY TRAY OF FOOD. I had to ask the checker to replace at least the beans.
Food quality: The marbled Brisket was SALTY and lacked that juicy, coveted, brown fat that lends so much flavor to good meat. The Brisket was so salty, I could have used a pickle slice to take the edge off. The pork ribs were drier than any meat I've ever had with exception to jerky. However, it wasn't a total loss... the cole slaw was decent, the mac and cheese was good, but if you're looking for barbecue, I'm sure many would have concluded the McRib is juicier and has less salt.
Atmosphere: Despite trying to dine away from the "Karaoke" in the main dining hall, the well-tuned amateur vocals didn't do much for the ambiance. It wasn't even country music... I felt like I should left and returned with a Leisure Suit. Maybe this is something keeping customers away?
Accommodations: Napkins, paper towels... anything!? I'm surprised to see reasonable dining supplies are more well-guarded than luxury jewelry. At least luxury jewelry gets to be put on display - perhaps they were hoping the ribs would take the napkins' job and soak up whatever sauce was on your fingers.
Value for Price: This is Texas... no one should have the audacity to charge $22/lb for barbecue this bad. Significant improvement...
Read moreI hate giving a bad review. However I have to be honest. I had a 2 meat sandwich with 2 sides. The meat is good. But the sides are not impressive and not good. I had the Mac and cheese and the cheesey green beans. The Mac and cheese is made with packaged cheese that is the same as cheese whiz. Not homemade unless you consider just boiling pasta and spooning on cheese whiz as homemade. Cheesy green beans are not impressive. Creamed corn is not actual creamed corn but whole canned corn with cream of some type. No fried okra. They did have the regular beans but the potato salad looked like it came from Walmart. The portions are very small for the price. Not much in regards to deserts. You stand in line and go through a type of cafeteria line. Food is served on Styrofoam plates. Then you clean your table after. For the price, it's not worth the visit. The building is very nice, clean and I do love the decor. But it's truly lacking good food, size of portions and the food is not homemade except the meat and baked potatoes. The person with me had the baked potato with brisket. The potato was overcooked and old. No butter, sour cream, cheese until you are asked and then just a tsp of each in sealed containers to use. I was not impressed at all. No bread offered on plates. The parking and location are great and I wanted to really love this place but it was very disappointing. For the cost, there are...
Read moreWe were in Fredericksburg for the day and did not want to eat off the Main Street where the rest of the tourists were trying to get lunch. We decided on a BBQ joint and rolled up to this place. As you walked in, you can see the BBQ pit being manned inside the screened porch. We go to place our order and opt for the 3 meat plate of brisket, tri tip and pork loin. They did not ask if we wanted moist brisket or not. The guy quickly cut our meat for the plate and we picked the sides we wanted. I was a little disappointed that the Italian Cream cake was sold out, but we made do. They did offer us a side of beans for no extra charge in addition to the 2 sides we had already chosen.
The brisket had a nice smoke ring and great season crust. You could tell they used more than just salt and pepper, which I am a fan of. It was tender and fell apart easily. The pork loin also had a nice smoky taste to it. I really enjoyed it. The tri tip was a bit tough, but had a nice flavor. The sides were all homemade. I opted for potato salad and cheesy green beans. The beans they provided also had a nice smokey flavor to them.
This place was a fantastic stop on our trip to Fredericksburg. It is...
