Oh...my, God. I truly don't have enough superlatives in my lexicon to do justice to the heavenly culinary experience my children and I just had at this hole in the wall gem of an establishment in St. Croix.
We arrived and were seated by an extremely busy but sweet hostess. For a late Sunday night, the restaurant was crowded, and she was doing triple duty as bartender, hostess, and waitress for all the tables. The dinner menu had a short but tantalizing list of goodies to choose from: corn and crab chowder soup; a flat iron steak grilled with asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes, and hollandaise sauce; and a chicken parmigiana over fettuccini with savory marinara and baked mozzarella and parmesan, among other traditional and creative dishes.
My daughter and I were in the mood for a good, old-fashioned selection and ordered the chicken parm special. Without exaggeration, it was the most delicious chicken parmigiana I've ever tasted. This was hearty, rustic, home-cooked tasting food that was obviously cooked with love. The portion was generous, the chicken cutlets juicy and crisped to perfection, the pasta (tasted like homemade) a perfect al dente, and the sauce rich with fragrant fresh tomatoes.
The Caesar salad we all shared was a perfectly made Caesar that tasted like it was tossed fresh table-side. The corn-crab chowder was amazing. My son (who's usually extremely fussy about steak) had the flat-iron steak and gave a big thumbs up for both tenderness and taste.
My daughter, who almost never eats a vegetable, much less brussel sprouts, shared an appetizer of perfectly sauteed brussels with me and actually loved them. It just goes to show that if you cook a vegetable deliciously to perfection, kids WILL actually eat them.
The food was served, personably, by the chef himself who single-handedly cooked for the busy restaurant. The waitress/bartender/hostess managed to give us amazingly attentive, super friendly service.
Coming from NY, we all left the meal a bit stunned. We hadn't eaten a restaurant meal this good for years. To top it all off, for the quality of the food, the prices were relatively reasonable (about $50/person before tip).
Hats off to the chef. This restaurant is a must-try destination for all visitors...
Read moreUpon arriving for our reservation at 8pm, our reservation was not listed however, they were still able to seat us. I noticed 3 tables dining, one of which was just about to leave and only one server. We asked for pellegrino water and the server returned and dropped it off on the table and indicated that it was open, she never poured it for us but we did notice she poured water for the table next to us. Half of the menu was not available, nevertheless we ordered our appetizers however, it seems the server was not paying attention as she returned 5 minutes later to ask the same question. We were perplexed, as with only 2 other tables it was not busy at this time. We received our drinks, of which I ordered the berry smash, their take on a bourbon/whiskey smash. Based on the menu the ingredients consisted of bulleit, smashed blackberries, blackberry simple syrup, and lemon. When I tasted the drink, I only noticed the flavors of bourbon and ice. I requested simple syrup to balance the drink however I ended up sending it back and I let the server know why to which her response was it’s a top shelf bourbon drink. As an avid bourbon/whiskey drinker/bartender who is familiar with Bulleit, Elijah Craig, 1792, Woodford, and Basil Hayden to name a few, I let her know the cocktail was not well balanced. She never asked if I wanted anything else either. When placing our entree orders, we were told to pick our vegetable. I ordered green beans. The busser dropped our food off and I noticed I received asparagus instead of green beans, I tried to stop him to let him know but he was already gone. Our server was talking to the table directly across from us for most of the night and she only came to check on us and when we were almost finished, at which point I asked her if the kitchen was out of green beans. Her response was I thought you ordered asparagus. She did get green beans from the kitchen which I did appreciate however, the overall service that we received from start to finish was very disappointing and we were not pleased with the service...
Read moreThis is a hard one as people have suggested this place to us and honestly it was disappointing. I don't normally give low stars but it is granted. We spent a decent amount of money as their prices are not low, and all four of us were disappointed with the food and service from this place. I was visiting the Island so this is from my perspective as a tourist (maybe for locals it is a different experience). The place was empty when we got there but immediately told us they were getting ready for a large party so they needed our order fairly quickly and it's what we did. The restaurant was empty no other table but us, The server (even before the large party got there) was nowhere to be seen and we constantly have to chase them down for drinks. The Cesar salads were okay, not fresh lettuce and the dressing taste was off. I ordered the "Ocean Offering Mahi" and there was no flavor, fish didn't taste fresh. The dish was not impressive at all despite how expensive it was ($42 for 6oz fish). The seared scallops were actually good that was probably the only thing we liked. The worst dish was the Surf and Turf with New York Steak it was super disappointing. It looked good but when you tasted the meat it was horrible. It looks like they just took the steak straight out of the fridge and put it on a hot pan so the steak was cold inside and the fat, which on a NY steak should be melting in your mouth, was a chewy piece of fat and disgusting, once again another expensive dish ($46) and it was very disappointing. Sadly it was the worst experience in the whole week in the island and the many restaurants we tried, particularly because of the hype people gave us about Six Nine. Based on my experience if you want to try it, that is on you. I will Not recommend it. Just to clarify, we finished our dinner right before the "large party" (15 pp) started to get there and be seated, so there was no excuse for the bad service...
