After two satisfying takeout orders and rave reviews passed around my friends’ group chat, I finally made my way to Calcutta Chaat and Sweets for a dine-in experience—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.
TL;DR – Right now, this is by far the best Indo-Chinese spot in the South Bay.
We dug into a variety of dishes: chow mein, fried rice, gobhi Manchurian, chicken lollipop, and chicken Manchurian (not all in one sitting 😅). Everything was fresh, crispy, and perfectly spiced. It's that balance of flavor and texture you crave in Indo-Chinese. Each dish had that perfect crunch, a bit of spice, and a depth of flavor that hit the spot.
I also ventured into their traditional offerings: chicken kosha, veg cutlet, and misthi doi. The misthi doi especially—honestly, it took me straight back to my childhood on the streets of Cuttack (a neighboring city to Kolkata). If you’ve ever wandered through the lanes of Cuttack, you’ll know the streets hum with this distinct fusion of flavors. The chicken kosha was rich and comforting, while the veg cutlet had that nostalgic crunch.
It’s evident the owners are serious about keeping the authenticity alive—and I have no doubt this place can be a game-changer in the Bay Area food scene, which is often overrun by generic South Indian eateries or overpriced North Indian spots that claim Michelin-level status. Here, you get real flavors, real taste, and real heart.
Wishing the team all the best and hoping they maintain this high-quality, authentic experience for years to come. If you’re in the Bay Area and craving Indo-Chinese or true Bengali street food, this is the place...
Read moreThis Indian restaurant is located in Ardenwood Plaza. The name, Chaat & Bakery, suggests a focus on bakery items, but it actually offers a mix of Calcutta street food, Indo-Chinese dishes, and classic Indian staples. The bakery section mainly features puffs and a few sweets, but they didn’t look very fresh.
We started with the Puchka/Pani Puri, which was really good. The Veg/Chicken Manchow soups were tasty, though a bit heavy on the sauces. When I saw the American Choupsey, I instantly wanted to try it, and it tasted perfect - though the noodles softened up quickly. They should’ve preferred mixing noodles and gravy little later to keep the crispness. The Chicken Egg Roll was okay, though it was overloaded with cucumber and onions rather than chicken, and the thin roti it was wrapped in was nice.
The Chicken Mughlai Paratha was deep-fried, which we didn’t expect, but it was still flavorful. The Indo-Chinese dishes, like Chowmein and Fried Rice, were the highlights - authentic street-style flavors and definitely a must-try. The Veg Cutlet, which was mostly beetroot, leaned a bit on the sweeter side but was still good. We also tried the Ghugni Pav, which was a nice addition.
Overall, we had a pleasant dinner. While the ambience could be improved, the...
