I wanted to start off with a jack and coke. They don't serve liquor, but what the waitress said was our liquor is wine based but tastes the same. I decided to try it, should have went with my gut because it was horrible. Maybe it is a law in Gallup, NM that liquor has to be wine based. So letting this slide. Next was the past well done potato skins with black bacon. Dry and overcooked is an understatement. I tried to dip them in the flavorless sour cream (not sure how the sour cream sucks). Next was a side salad (plate of lettuce with a couple small carrot pieces). Victory I exclaimed, the lettuce plate was fresh. Then I added my "ranch" dressing. It was watered down ranch. Maybe to cut costs so they could charge $25-$60 for a "specialized" aged wet or dry steak. Decided not to chance an overpriced steak and just go with a burger. My wife got a chicken sandwich. Usually a good burger comes with the wait staff asking how you want it cooked, this did not happen. After about 25 minutes the food arrived. My burger and badlands chips and my wife's chicken sandwich and fries. Fries and chips were overcooked, dey, and tastless. The burger and chicken were overcooked, dry, and tastless. Maybe they are scared of undercooking food. How do you present yourself as an upscale restaurant when you can't make a simple burger or chicken sandwich. So glad I didn't attempt a steak, I would have been very upset if I ordered an expensive steak. Needless to say we left and will stop at taco bell to get something quick and halfway good based upon the recent experience with BADLANDS GRILL. save time and money and scrape some bugs off your windshield for...
Read moreI just enjoyed the most delicious steak the other night at Badlands. The marbling gave each bite a wonderful flavor and texture. I had only ordered the Badlands Sirloin, but the quality of the meat is what makes it fantastic. The garlic mashed potatoes are very good, though perhaps they could be benefited by depth beyond a good deal of garlic. The salad is, as expected, not what draws you to a restaurant like this, but of a good size. Though I wasn't able to stay for dessert at my last visit, the desserts I have had are a fine selection to finish off the meal. Creme brulee is a favorite of mine on the menu.
Walking in after 7pm it was still bright enough outside that it took a moment for my eyes to adjust to the lighting as they keep it fairly dim in the restaurant. The furnishings aren't anything fancy, but there is an impressive fireplace toward the back that you'll want to watch the children by as they go to the restroom. The classic setting of old-time steakhouse is fairly well maintained throughout.
I'd love to eat here regularly, but with that fantastic taste comes a fantastic cost. While many a steakhouse has prices to exceed those at Badlands Grill, the cost of admission for fine dining in Gallup is along the same lines and will likely exceed that of most restaurants in the area. This, of course, is fitting as it comes with a taste to match, so it will remain the place I go for very...
Read moreWhile passing through Gallup, we decided to give Badlands grill a try after reading good reviews and looking over the online menu which showed some good options for $10-$20. When we arrived the wait staff was very friendly, but the atmosphere wasn't what I had expected for a $35 a plate steak dinner I.E country western slow jams, vinyl booths and paper table clothes. This look didn't deter me, good food is good food, but when we opened up the menus we saw quickly that the online menu was misrepresentative of the current menu which consisted of $37 for three appetizers, $18 pasta with no protein, $16 calamari, $5 sodas, and nothing available for less than $15. I have no opposition to high prices if that's what I know to expect. We chose to leave because I had not planned to spend no less than $50 for a dinner for two. I can't comment on the food, but wanted to let others know that the prices are higher than what is shown on TripAdvisor, or their...
