Happened 6/6/2025 My family has been coming here for decades as Gallup natives. However, the disrespect from the 71 yr old man who works late night was absolutely disgusting and absolutely unwarranted. We walked in to spend money - and tip for doing us a late night service; however just wow⊠I am left shook.
We walked in waited a short bit and the tall skinny man greeted us and it followed with how they may not be able to do sandwiches⊠ok thatâs fine but our initial reason upon visit was a sandwich but finding an alternative was no problem for us as the donuts would have sufficed. Since the man said âprobablyâ no sandwiches we asked what about just one? He replied with at first a funny light hearted answer but was immediately political⊠also says how he DOESNâT want to make a sandwich for us and now the burritos spread open in the back will sit there for a while before theyâre even cooked (steering us away from business and imposing that they will be no good by the time they sell them) ⊠which is not the issue⊠at least for us. He goes on to say that the man whoâs making the sandwiches is tired and once that guy leaves, he will leave and lock up.. still not a problem (but why say youâre open 24hrs?) We did not want to tire the sandwich guy out any more since he did have a ginormous back up of burritos and sandwiches. He points to my boyfriend and asks him again what heâd like (aggressively) and my boyfriend declined. The rest of us all decided on donuts. The tall skinny 71 yr old man starts rambling about how he âwouldâ only open the door for Obama and which we replied with an uncomfortable laugh and agreeing to make this guys night easier since he just went on about hating how he works at 71 and how it sucksâŠ. and he then replies with âOnly to shoot his ass and hang him up!!!â starts going on a loud aggressive rant. We just were like ???? and he then points to a girl in our small group and said âLiberals like you will be nothing and workâŠâ âYou will always be the bottom and always be nothingâ- he kept going for a minute but honestly was in shock with how he had his finger pointed at her and going off. Funny how none of us are liberal but okay⊠We then replied with âYou know what? weâre good⊠put the donuts backâŠâ and he replied with a big smile and said thatâs fine. We showed ourselves the door because how uncomfortable was that? I felt like he was going to point a gun with how aggressive and insane he was being. He went into DETAIL about killing??? and then insults them for what???? for absolutely no reason???? This whole time he had a demeaning and aggressive tone from the start. He then said as we walked out âThats what happens when you get political!!!â When no one in our group even mentioned ANYTHING political! There was three teenage boys sitting at a table waiting for their food and when we turned around they had eyes so big and they said ââŠHave a good nightâŠ.â and all we told them was to be safe and do the same. We ran into them the next day at my cousins party and they recognized us and said âHey arenât you the people from West End? What was wrong with that guy? He was weird with us too!â But West End Deli⊠what the??? If youâre that miserable then go somewhere else, buddy. No need to project it to people wanting to spend money at your business and insult a customer because you assumed their political party????? He should be embarrassed. Never seen a business run like this in this town⊠yet my life⊠I hope God heals him of his cranky,...
Read moreA Hidden Gem in Gallup: Where Nostalgia Meets a Perfect Sandwich (and an Even Better Donut)
In a world of ever-changing food trends and overhyped eateries, thereâs something deeply satisfying about stumbling upon a place that gets it right without the fuss. Tucked away in the heart of Gallup, this unassuming sandwich shop is a local institutionâone of those rare finds that could easily be overlooked by a passerby but remains a beloved staple for those in the know.
Walking in, youâre immediately struck by the kind of old-school charm that feels like a step back to a simpler time. The atmosphere is steeped in nostalgia, from the well-worn counters to the comforting hum of conversation between regulars and the staff who know their orders by heart. Itâs the kind of place where history lingers in the airânot in a manufactured way, but in the quiet authenticity of a shop thatâs been feeding its community for years.
Sandwiches Done Right
The sandwiches here are everything they should be: fresh, thoughtfully made, and delicious in a way that makes you question why something so simple isnât always this good. Whether itâs a classic turkey and Swiss or something heartier, each bite delivers that perfect balance of flavor and texture. The bread is soft yet sturdy, the ingredients taste like they were prepped with care, and thereâs an unmistakable homemade quality that makes even the most familiar combinations feel like something special.
Despite the shopâs unassuming size, the operation runs like a well-oiled machine. The staff is warm, efficient, and impressively quick, juggling a steady stream of phone orders while keeping the in-store experience just as smooth. Even in the midday rush, thereâs an ease to the service that speaks to years of practice, a quiet mastery of their craft.
Donuts Worth the Detour
But hereâs the real secret: as good as the sandwiches are, the donuts might just be even better. This is the kind of old-fashioned donut case that belongs in a movieâlined with pillowy-soft, golden-brown treats that make it nearly impossible to choose just one.
The bear claws are a work of art, oversized and flaky with just the right amount of sweetness. The twist bars, nearly the length of a forearm, are a testament to the philosophy that bigger is indeed betterâespecially when theyâre this light, airy, and perfectly glazed. Every donut here has that unmistakable homemade taste, the kind of deep-fried perfection thatâs crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and just the right balance of rich and sweet. Theyâre the kind of pastries you tell yourself youâll save for later, only to find yourself finishing before you even get to the car.
The Kind of Place You Donât Forget
This is the kind of place that doesnât need to chase trends or put on a show. Itâs a slice of Gallupâs soul, a humble yet exceptional eatery that locals cherish and travelers are lucky to discover. If youâre passing through, do yourself a favorâstop in, grab a sandwich, and, most importantly, donât leave without a donut (or three). Itâs the kind of food that sticks with you long after the last bite, reminding you that sometimes, the best meals come from the most...
Read moreI like this place and Iâve come here for years, despite the steep prices and far west-of-town location.
The last experience I had was very frustrating. I ordered two Turkey sandwich specials, one without cheese because my husband gets sick when he eats dairy. The cashier was super nice and competent. I watched her very clearly explain to the man making our $20-a-piece sandwiches that one order was without cheese and then watched him put cheese on it anyway. I told the cashier, who clarified with the man making the sandwich. I saw him get frustrated. What I didnât see until I got home was that he just scraped most of the cheese off and wrapped up the sandwich.
The whole situation made me feel duped and like it was somehow my fault for asking that our $20 sandwich be made in such a way that it wonât make my husband sick. I like this place and the quality of their product, but the contempt for paying customers who just want to receive what they ordered is really off putting. Food allergies and cross contamination should be taken seriously and that sandwich should have been properly remade.
It pains me to say I donât think...
