Came here on Easter with the rents from Bham. They're locals, but I was visiting. My dad wanted to go to some nasty chain restaurant, but there was no way I was gonna pay the same price for the same amount of food at a chain restaurant if I could go to a local place with decent food.
This was not that place.
First, I called to see if they were open and they were until 1PM. It was 11:30 and we were 12 mins out so we hurried on over so we didn't keep the staff waiting on us. A lot more people showed well after us so I'm not sure why the staff seemed so put out.
The only staff I saw were all about 21 and under girls- none of whom were even feigning a smile. My poor, elderly parents were so sweet to the short, brunette girl behind the counter and she was just so unbelievably rude and inhospitable to us. I get that there's a lot of disrespectful church folks that come in on Sunday- even Easter- but that's not my family. To be treated so blatantly rude was immediately the clincher.
Then came the food. First, I asked for the jumbo shrimp. The girl snidely remarked that they "don't do steamed jumbo shrimp." Um....like the jumbo shrimp platter on the STEAMED menu? OK.
They got my order wrong and didn't make spicy butterfly shrimp for me which I, ultimately, ended up ordering. Not sure what the spicy tasted like but it had to have been more flavorful than the bland shrimp I received. They boil their corn and potatoes in the same oil as the shrimp, clearly, because they had a seafood-y aftertaste.
Definitely a rookie mistake. For $18, I could've tented some foil, smothered some shrimp in Old Bay/garlic butter, and been better off. Oh, and the orange Fanta was completely flat.
The girl had said that they'd "call our name" when the food was done to come get it, but after the warm welcome we received, we just let her bring it out to us.
When we got done and had an entire overflowing container full of shrimp shells, plastic ramekins, and dirty napkins, I looked feverishly for a trash can. There wasn't one at all outside, so I went inside and didn't see one, either. I asked another girl behind the register where there was one and she said, flippantly, "Just leave it on the table."
So we did. We weren't done hanging out and talking, though, so we put it on another table because there was no way were talking over a full table of trash. It was windy and the top wouldn't close so the napkins kept flying out. Not my problem if you won't provide something as obvious as a trash can at a restaurant. A poor guy and his dad had to move it to a chair and sit by our trash so they could also enjoy outdoor seating.
Speaking of outdoor seating, they need to get some ziplocs and fill them with water and pennies cause the fly problem was insane.
The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because they had ample outdoor seating. That's it. Won't be back, especially when much better seafood places nearby are open on any other given Sunday.
Oh, and after rushing to get there over an hour before closing so we didn't keep the staff waiting, there were people still coming in AFTER 1PM when we...
Read moreThere was only once my order was wrong. I did take out and ordered steamed shrimp plate with an extra pound but someone forgot the extra pound. But another time I actually thought it was wrong again it actually wasn't. It was just that the size of the shrimp was totally different from the previous time. I wish they didn't add the heads with the weight on the royal red though. Probably need to let we slow folks know about that and the size differences more often so we don't think our order is wrong. And so we can choose if we want to order that size the next time the bigger ones come in. It's pretty good. Good enough to go back but I can think of some flavor issues I've had with ordering steamed shrimp in the past. Some days they taste noticeably better than others. No issues with the fried stuff though myself. My grandma only had one issue with the oyster poboys having extremely large oysters that weren't fried well enough for her. She prefers them smaller or at the very least cooked more. They just looked seared for lack of better word. Like they pulled them out as soon as they put them in. Outside done. Inside basically raw. Haha. I like raw oysters but for people like her who ordered fried bc they want it cooked.... May wanna let them know first that they want it that way. But taste wise they were the bomb. Just letting everyone know that some nights are super busy and it can take some time to sit and get the table wiped. It can also be so loud it can drown out you hearing your name called when its ready. Oh and if I'm not mistaken during the weekdays you have to order fried up front and steamed in the back. I've been on weekends that they did it all in the front though so I'm not sure what days they do what. Which may suck for people waiting in line for a long time at the front register just to be told to walk to...
Read moreReally good seafood restaurant run by locals. I've been looking for a replacement seafood spot since my favorite closed down a while back. This has been my favorite so far. I had them once before they moved into this location, someone took an order for the office. Not wanting to stink up the place I just ordered a shrimp poboy. I don't remember much so wasn't good or bad? Didn't get anything from the deli this time. Ordered the snow crab and shrimp combo and 1lb royal reds. Unlike my other place, they only have levels of heat, and not types of seasoning. So if you're a lemon pepper head you'll have to bring your own. Got medium on both and it was mild enough I question how spicy the hot is. Regardless it was good. Shrimp, reds and crab were well cooked even though I got everything togo. I was a little leary when I saw them squirt butter/margarine on my seafood after it was cooked and boxed. I've been to too many places in Florida where they take precooked crab/shrimp/crawfish, sprinkle whatever garlic seasoning and butter, then pop the tray in a microwave and charge $20/lb for that. Not the case as everything was freshly steamed. Prices are very reasonable also. $12 for a 1lb steamed shrimp platter. It was close to closing, and kind of busy so things took a little longer. I would think on the weekends they get really busy and wait times are long. They didn't have a lot of steamers to handle a huge influx of orders. They did have a good amount of seating inside and out, and I would assume the cheap daiquiris help with the wait. Unfortunately I'm not a frozen drink person and was absolutely starving when I got home. So I inhaled 3/4 of the food without thinking of taking a pic, will update...
