In my continuing quest to find the best lobster roll on the greater New England coast, Five Islands is clearly a cool place that is family/dog friendly with outstanding views. Classic order at the counter and then pick up at another counter depending on what you order. Service was fast and very friendly...even offering a treat to my boxer. Huge place with tons of outdoor seating available. The day we visited was not super busy so parking on a busy day could be crazy.
So let's get down to it. The lobster roll was pretty darn good...good size, light mayo, and super fresh but mostly claw/knuckle so while flavor, freshness, buttered/grilled classic roll definitely put it in the top third range (I rank lobster rolls in range sections 1 to 3 - top range is a very good roll). The price and claw/knuckle combo put it in the lower part of the top tier. Fries were solid lobster roll fries.
Whole bellied fried clams were huge and incredibly fresh...also a decent price. Wish they had a tad longer amount of time in the fryer. Always gotta try the o rings and these were very good onion rings on the thicker side with great batter to onion ratio. Again, could have used a tad more time in the fryer.
Star of the day goes to the Jenny Special. Grilled Haddock with a crab cake on a nice soft buttered and grilled bun. Wasn't sure about it but do yourself a favor and try it.

Read moreWe were visiting two of my favorite family members on a gorgeous summer day on the coast of Maine so the setting is wonderful, unless you have any mobility problems like my wonderful husband does. The wait to order our food was about 25-30" and another 15" or so to pick up so I recommend you grab a picnic table quickly and make sure to walk on the cement or boardwalk area if you have trouble w/mobility. There is no menu posted anywhere. I asked for one and I was given a brochure with basically an overview of their food offerings w/no prices or beverages listed. The menu is actually written inside one of two small bldgs where you place your order. You can choose from assorted refrigerated bottled soda, water and iced tea near where you pay. Steamed corn or other foods must be ordered at the next bldg. The lobster roll is a bit pricey at $30.95, and includes bagged chips although they have a larger one that costs a bit more. My husband loved it. The onion rings are very good and they pile them high so easily 2 or 3 people can enjoy an order which costs about $12.00. The crab cake sandwich was just okay but the haddock and the tuna got a big smile from family members. All in all, it's a good experience if you don't mind the wait, a bit of rocky terrain and figuring out...
Read moreFor a place that so many people rave about we were disappointed. We got the scallop basket, Jenny special, onion rings and a Cole slaw (we asked for 2 but only got one which ended up being a good thing). The Haddock in the Jenny special tasted like a wet sponge and the crab cake tasted so heavily of grilled fish that you certainly could not taste the crab. Clearly the crab cake is fried on the same grill as all the other seafood. It was not enjoyable at all. We must have misunderstood the scallop basket as we were expecting battered and fried scallops and not just plain grilled scallops. Overall the scallops tasted like a rubber band and the fries were soggy and limp without much flavor. I love a good creamy Cole slaw and this was the opposite of that. It was not creamy at all and had a sour taste to it. I'm very glad that the order was messed up and we only paid for 1. The highlight of the meal was the onion rings. On a scale of 1 to 5 they were a 10. Seriously they were that good. Probably the best...
