Short version... Food is delicious, top-notch imo. Service was not good at all. I would say "rude" which I've seen in a couple other reviews, but distracted, uncaring, and making us feel like we were an inconvenience would about sum up the service. Really got the feeling that this is one of those places where the management, owner(s), and select few may care about customer service but the wait staff and the people that actually deal with the customers feel like the customers are a nuisance and life would be better without them. We go greeted and seated quickly because the place was about empty. So far, so good. After being seated we had time to look through the impressive menu of delicious food, including items you don't see much on any of the local Mexican menus. There are some authentic looking items and more deserts than I've ever seen at a Mexican eatery around here. Still so far, so good. Then we sat and sat. Had time to discuss what we were interested in having, time to read the descriptions of what we were considering, time to discuss many things. No drinks. No chips. No nothing. We were at 1 of the 3 tables with customers at this point. If I was a people person we could have gotten to know the people at the other 2 tables. We had time to admire the artwork, which I did like. Anyway... service was slow. People in the back. We saw them back there. We heard them talking. They ignored us all. So... blah blah blah.... super slow, I asked what was good and was told "Ehh... anything." Shouldn't wait staff have a standard recommendation in mind for customers that are a little overwhelmed with a thick menu and no idea about the place? Maybe that's just me. No point deduction there. Big point deduction for the fact that they seem to make it a habit of serving anyone at the table whatever is ready while others wait for theirs to be ready. Having the food for a table come all at once, hot, and ready is standard for a reason and bringing one person's food in one trip then someone else's food 15 minutes later is completely unacceptable. As a matter of fact, I'm scrolling back up to remove another star. Rating a place 2 stars when the food was delicious is crazy, but that's what happens when you make customers wait too long in an uncrowded restaurant before at least taking their drink orders, behave impatient and as if you wish the customers would just go away, never offer refills on the drinks, bring the chips and one entrée at the same time, and the other entrée 15 minutes later... umm... I think that's enough ranting. Was that a rant? Maybe. I've had time to get over it, but as I typed it came rushing back. But... the food is very very tasty. If I lived closer I'd probably find myself trying to eat here occasionally because of the good food, then remembering why I don't go...
Read moreOur first experience there wasn't the greatest. Waier gave us misinformation about the food causing us to change our orders only to find out that another more experienced and long time server (I think he was a waiter or a manager) gave us correct information about the food which was the opposite of what we were told by our waiter. Unfortunately this was just as our food was being served to us. We had a tough time getting our waiters attention at times and he seemed very unapologetic about the misinformation and service. Otherwise the food was ok. I'm not sure if it was just "ok" because it wasn't that good or because we all settled for another plate other than what we all initially wanted. I'm confident in saying it probably had to do with both. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at this place again. But if we were hungry and everyone else was closed, I'd eat here again. The fact that they have a tiny bar and serve alcohol definitely helps. As for the atmosphere.. it's quaint, old school and a bit dingy. Tales you back to some diner you'd find in the middle of New Mexico somewhere. Spanish music playing loudly over the 2 small TV's on the wall. Each playing something different. And on the 3rd wall a projector projecting some unknown program that you couldn't see due to the missing projection screen, causing the video to dance and lose itself on the I'll faded dirty white colored background of a wall painting of cacti in a desert. It's possible that our visit might of been a fluke. But even towards the end as I tried to salvage the evening... The server wasn't very friendly. I tried. Despite this fact, I left a good tip for him... maybe he was having a bad day. One...
Read moreNot bad. I tried the Texana Fajita Nachos w/o onions and peppers but think if I got it again, it would taste better over a bed of rice rather than tortilla chips for my personal opinion. They add spices in this that taste like AllSpice that throw it off a bit from mexican food and give it more of a middle eastern taste. And if it went over rice I might say no queso in it either. Being from San Diego, it is hard to accept what they consider “ mexican” food out here as anything but imposters because once you have had true authentic mexican food from Mexico or San Diego, you realize it is not the same but something to sell the locals based upon what they eat. For example, queso (the dip) in mexican food is not a thing but shredded cheeses and some other cheeses are used that are much better. The salsa is watery and not flavorful. There is a place in Hixson called Spanglish that makes a good salsa with flavor. These are my opinions based on where I am from and know what true mexican food is. If I hit the lottery I would build a real taco shop with the...
