My wife and I like to try different local places as we travel. My wife saw this restaurant on the Google Maps app and we decided to try it out. While the restaurant is part of a 24 hour truck stop, it does have business hours. We arrived about 20 minutes before they were scheduled to close at 8pm that Sunday.
We were greeted by a very friendly waitress and told to sit anywhere. She took our drink orders (sweet and unsweet tea), and let us look at the menu for a bit. My wife ordered a bowl of chili with a baked potato with cheese on the side to make a chili cheese baked potato. I ordered the liver and onions with mashed potatoes, gravy, and Mac and cheese. We weren't waiting long before the food was in front of us.
The chili came out in a big bowl, while the potato and cheese were on a separate plate. The potato was hot and perfectly cooked. (She worried it would have been microwaved like she's experienced in other establishments.) The chili and the potato was very good, both individually and together.
The liver and onions were also very good. The gravy complimented the liver and onions and mashed potatoes very well. The mashed potatoes without the gravy just tasted pretty standard. The Mac and cheese tasted similar to GFS. Overall, it was a good meal.
Before we left, my wife asked if the waitress could fill our tumbler with Sweet Tea. She was more than accommodating.
For both my wife and I, everything came to a little under $30. That's fantastic in today's economy.
That was a very pleasant experience that I can recommend to...
Read moreTucked inside a classic Kentucky truck stop with no-frills decor, the Yum Yum Shop is exactly what you’d expect—and a little more. We stopped in on a Tuesday night around 8:10 p.m. after a visit to Warsaw, not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen still open and cooking.
We ordered a double cheeseburger with onion rings and a Philly cheesesteak with fries. The cheeseburger is definitely for those with a big appetite—hearty, hot, and cooked just right. The Philly had great flavor and generous fillings, though it came on regular sandwich bread instead of a hoagie bun, which felt a bit out of place. The fries and onion rings were both excellent and served piping hot, but the portion sizes were on the smaller side.
One of the highlights of our visit was watching a sweet older couple, clearly regulars, beaming with pride over their granddaughter who was our waitress. It was a charming, small-town moment that made the whole experience feel even warmer.
If you’re in the Glencoe area and craving a solid roadside meal, this little hidden gem is worth the stop. No frills, no hype—just simple food and genuine people, the way a good Kentucky truck...
Read moreMedium sized truck stop, Dirt/ mud parking with lot of pot holes but it makes up for the food and the huge portions. I got the special and it was TWO bbq sandwiches and that came with fries and cold slaw. I have two meals for $10.99! I’ve had better but my crinkle fries were well done like I asked and were hot and crispy! The buns were grilled!!😜And the bbq was ok, plenty of meat just not over sauced. I could have asked for a little extra but didn’t! The Cole slaw looked home made and had celery seeds too… Nothing fancy and I would come back when passing through. I’m tired of the commercial truck stops and all the fast food … I carry food in the truck , but once in a while, I like hot homestyle food. That’s what I got here. The server was good and smiled and was very pleasant. I used the restroom again, nothing fancy, but I did like the tile on the walls. The store was small had a few normal options plus some smokers paraphernalia if that’s your thing. It all could’ve been a little cleaner, but the folks from India usually don’t care about that:...
