Sunday, August 5, 2012 I have been eating at this restaurant since 1970. Yeah, I know. Since 1970 it has always been an almost good restaurant. It has never achieved the status of a good restaurant in my estimation. The food has, for all of these years, been off the back of a truck. It was never as good as Schumacher’s or Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit. The service is terrible (for prompt food delivery) and the excuses are many. The last time we stopped, on 8-5-2012, we ordered our food and then waited… and waited and finally…. over an hour later, our food arrived. We had each ordered a glass of wine and the wine was good. We placed our orders, which included soup or salad. The salad and wine arrived fairly promptly. The salad was good and had a nice flavored house dressing. Our server brought a bread basket with the salads. The bread was four day old bread, enough said. It is fortunate that we like each other since we had a lot of time to converse. There was a table of five women next to us who were there when we arrived. After we had been there an hour, one of the women got up and she returned with the hostess, apologizing because the kitchen had gotten a backlog. They were still waiting for their food. Apparently, the restaurant had not anticipated the volume of business they had this evening. Not long after the hostess assured the ladies that their food was imminent, their food would be arriving, and as she was speaking it did. Arrive that is and Cold. By the expressions on their faces, we could see they were definitely NOT happy. They each looked at their plates and once again, the young lady threw her fork down and marched up to the hostess. She came back and all the ladies complained because ALL of their entrees were cold. The hostess said they could make their food order fresh and hot. However, the group opted to leave without eating their cold food or getting new plates. All this while we are still waiting for our food. By this time, we also asked our server about our food and why it was taking so long. Our server assured us that this did not usually happen there, and it was only because they had a lot more customers than they normally have. They had an outdoor afternoon free concert, so one would logically assume that some of these folks would also have dinner. Our food arrived and it was not cold. I had ordered Rostbraten ~ $14.99 "Bavarian Style" sliced roast beef served in a rich brown gravy, potato dumplings and red cabbage. The Rostbraten was out of a can as well as the "rich brown” salt encrusted gravy was out of a can. For canned meat it was edible barely. The gravy wasn't. The red cabbage was actually fairly good. Oh, and the "potato dumplings", are 80% flour. I am not sure how flour gets to be labeled potato but that's how it is. My wife tried the potatoes and could barely cut off a taste. She equated it to a foam rubber ball, only heavier. And it all was lukewarm. My wife ordered a Sausage Platter of Bratwurst, A mild, brown pork sausage - hints of nutmeg and coriander and Knackwurst, A smoked beef sausage with mild garlic - great with our horseradish mustard come with German Potato Salad and Sauerkraut ~ $14.99 The Bratwurst and Knackwurst were good, but not very spicy. She thought they would be spicier. They had been boiled, so they were hot (temperature wise). They were good with the horseradish mustard. The Sauerkraut, on the other hand was terrible. The German potato salad was mediocre. At this point, we can’t even say it is an almost good restaurant. As we left the driveway, we both said that we would not be returning anytime soon, especially since it cost $53.00. We like German food and we were devastated when John Schumacher closed his restaurant in New Prague, MN.

Read moreLast night we went to Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter as an early birthday dinner for my mom. We had a reservation so that we knew we could have a table inside and ready since two of us were coming from out of state. We were seated right away and quickly offered drinks and asked if we wanted any appetizers. Having looked up the menu online, my Mom knew that she wanted to try the Rouladen. She asked if there was any left, and the server graciously went to check. Thankfully, there was a few portions left and she willingly reserved one for my mom while the rest of us considered our dinner options. We wanted to try a variety of dishes so this was a serious consideration!
We ordered the Kaze Spatzle and (at the server’s recommendation) the Sausage Plate as appetizers. Both were delicious and I do recommend trying both. Next up came the rolls and a creamy chicken, bacon and potato soup. The soup was delicious, but the rolls were dry and hard.
The main course consisted of Rouladen for my mom, Schweinaxe with bread dumplings for my dad, the Bavarian Favorites Platter for my husband, and the Rahm Schnitzel for me. When the food came out, my mom remembered that she wanted to try the Bavarian Potato Salad, but hadn’t remembered in time to order it for dinner. Our server overheard and asked if she still wanted it, because she could go get some for us, and we said yes.
My personal favorite was the Raymond Schnitzel, followed by my dad’s pick (the Schweinaxe). He remembered having been to this restaurant as a kid and that was what he had ordered then. He said it was very tasty, but wished it could have been veal instead of pork. My husband liked all of the meats in his favorites platter. He said that the Rahm Puten Schnitzel was his favorite. It was tender and juicy, with a tasty sauce. Second, he liked the the Knackwurst, which had a great smoky flavor. As a whole, we agreed that the Red Cabbage was the best side dish. The potato dumplings were just okay and the bread dumpling was very dense and dry. Unfortunately, neither my mom or I were overly impressed with the Bavarian Potato salad, despite ordering it special. We’ll skip it next time. Since it was a birthday dinner, we ordered two desserts to share. One was a bread pudding with cherries and a Bailey’s glaze, and the other was a lemon and blueberry cake. This choice split the table. My mom and husband loved the bread pudding, whereas my dad and I loved the lemon cake. They were both amazing, but we definitely had our favorites. All in all, we’ll be back. This was some of the better German food we’ve had outside our own family kitchen(s). The restaurant itself was really nice, the people friendly and super helpful, and the outdoor area beautiful. Thank you Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter for an...
Read moreLove this place! I feel like the food has improved with the new ownership. The outside grounds are beautiful and on the weekends during the summer you can get brats, beer, warm pretzels, kettle corn along with live music in the beautiful biergartens. However we chose to eat inside this time, the decor inside is like a German grandma's house, this is part of the charm. We had a lovely young server, who was both efficient and fun. We later found out it was her first day, unbelievable! We also love the traditional german clothes all the employees wear. We had 6 of the appetizers/ sides and 2 of the desserts. A lot of the apps represent what's on the regular menu. They were all excellent or good. Our choices were the sausage sampler with kraut. It was delicious and paired well with the warm German potato salad side. We got a large warm pretzel with 2 sauces, cheese or mustard. I haven't had one this good since leaving New York. Didn't like the sweet mustard but the cheese sauce was delicious. We tried the potato pancakes. On this day they were more like crispy hashbrowns, that are good, but not like German pancakes at all. We ordered a side of spaetzle enhanced with swiss cheese and green onion . Oh so yummy! We got the schnitzel app that comes with 3 different gravies, all excellent. We each chose our favorite. For dessert we had the Rote Grutz(cooked berries) and Rahmsultz (vanilla custard). Separately they were excellent but mixed together they were amazing! All were generous portions and reasonably priced. Needless to say we rolled out of there fat and happy. We took a walk around the grounds/ gardens, visiting the goats and enjoying the live music 🎶 Can't...
