We came in on a Monday night just after it stopped snowing, so it wasn't very busy at all. The atmosphere is nice. They have music that's loud enough to hear but not overwhelming. Place seemed mostly clean.
The server seemed nice, but she wasn't very knowledgeable about the food. We asked if the guacamole had dairy in it, and she wasn't sure but agreed to check. I asked her a little while later, and she had clearly forgotten the question. She thought for a second and told me it didn't have dairy in it, but did not give me much confidence it wasn't a made up answer.
The food was marginal. It wasn't overly expensive, but wasn't much to write home about either. I ordered vegetarian fajitas with no dairy (i.e no sour cream, cheese, and avocado instead of guac if they normally use sour cream or something in their guac). Grilled fajita veggies are pretty easy, and they were pretty good. The rest was pretty bland.
My wife ordered the Burrito Especial Vegeteriana, and she hated it. Also her margarita had a funky taste to it we couldn't identify. I tried it and agreed there was something off about this. Checked with friends who were there four weeks ago, and they thought the same thing - avoid the margaritas.
Overall we weren't completely grossed out or anything, but not much...
Read moreReally a bummer seeing it go downhill like this. Used to be one of our go-to places for Mexican food and meeting up with friends. Went here today hopeful for a good experience but it seems it has gotten markedly worse since we last came. For one thing, the menu seems to have changed, so don’t count on the menu on the website matching what’s in the restaurant anymore. Lunch used to be daily — now it’s weekdays only. We went specifically FOR lunch, but ended up spending $30+ more than we were expecting to. The prices have gone up to, which we understand in this stupid tariff economy happens everywhere. Yet the food quality has also suffered quite substantially. The salsa is definitely different, and not for the better. There were (what I’m hoping was) cilantro stems and big uncoupled hunks of onion. Very poor quality overall. The steak in my wife’s fajita salad were so gristly, she was unable to eat it. Pointed this out to the server to no avail. Other dishes looked and tasted so-so at best. Again, really a bummer to see one of the better Mexican restaurants go downhill. Hoping it improves but I can’t honestly say I feel much like coming back when there are much better alternatives like Old Mexico in Suamico with better food,...
Read moreFirst time here (new to the neighborhood) and this will be our new go-to restaurant! Upon entering we were greeted immediately and shown to a table. But the first thing we noticed was how clean this place is! You’d be hard-pressed to find a cleaner restaurant. Our drink order was taken quickly and came to the table lightning fast. All the staff are really friendly, and even called me “amigo”. That might seem silly to some, but I think it added to the ambiance. Speaking of, this place is so brightly colored you can’t help but feel happy just being in here. The fake roof above the booths is a nice touch as well. And the music is loud enough to hear, but not be a distraction. Chips were crispy and the salsa was fresh and delicious (not too spicy) and the bean dip is so god you could just eat it by itself. We order tamales for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. The chicken was a little dry, but the flavor was amazing! The margaritas were just right… could taste the booze but not overpowering. The enchiladas were perfect with juicy chicken. Never thought I’d say this, but it blows El Sarape out of the water. Great job guys! Hope to see you...
