Mr J's Q — Restaurant in Greenville

Expectations were high!

I love a hole in the wall, soul food, meat&3, off the beaten path and maybe in a sketch area…

Mr. J’s Q checked all of the boxes.

You enter through the door around from the front. You Order at the counter. Either from the menu or the daily lunch specials.

Today they had baked chicken, baked turkey necks or angus beef steak.

Sides were choices of Lima Beans, Cut Green Beans, corn on cob, Hog Maw w/ rice, Mac+ Cheese, Turnip Greens, yams, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, or Macaroni Salad.

Regular menu items: Ribs, bbq sandwiches, burgers, and fish are always available.

The baked chicken is fall of the bone tender. The dressing is sage heavy, moist and a nice texture. The green beans were cooked to a mushy consistency.

The BBQ ribs are the star of the show. Smokey, meaty and tasty without sauce. The sauce is good with a tangy vinegar flavor.

Mac and cheese is interesting. Not super cheesy, but good.

Food time was a long wait. They do a big takeaway/door dash and to-go Orders.

I’d get the ribs to-go with sauce...

The staff at Mr. J's were friendly, and know how to barbecue. I had the 6(?) rib plate with two sides - potato salad and baked beans.

The ribs were delicious and fell right off the bone. Where I come from (Washington (WA)), you get half the meat which is of lower quality - small ribs with a lot of fat. Mr. J's ribs are now in my top 3, landing at #1. I was suprised at how large the ribs were and how much meat they had on them.

The potato salad was absolutely delicious. It had more of a creamy texture with something extra added to make it taste delicious. This is now the place that serves my favorite potato salad.

It's not only the food, but also the great price. It would have costed a third, if not more for the same size dish in WA. Kudos to the queens working the kitchen at Mr. J's BBQ. Keep up...

Service is terrible. I call 1 hour prior to me calling from my church and they told me that it would be ready in 45 minutes. I get there and give her my name and she told me it wasn't ready. Of course this is an hour after I talk to them. Then the lady tells me I don't care what they told you we got 90 people I've got to serve. Totally unprofessional. She should apologize for telling me it was 45 minutes to be ready. I will not be returning to Mr J's anytime soon nor will I refer any of my friends to go to his place of business because of their poor lack of communication with...
