Be careful, your popularity, and high volume is minimizing staff friendliness, food appearance and portion sizes....quality drop is close behind. Not as impressed as I once was with Abbott's as I have been with other famous New England lobster-seafood places. Management training- inspiration - food purchasing and prep standards should all be revisited. I'm not giving up on you yet. Good Luck with your Legacy!! **I went back today 8/29/22...and I am glad I did. The cashier and Pick Up Counter associates were friendly and efficient in their service. The cashier helped patiently with my lack of their massive menu knowledge. It's hard because their menu is on a large wood sign back in the line area ( that you can not see when you step up to the Order Window ) and when other customers come up behind you in the Line / Menu sign area it feels wrong to stand and keep reading all the menu options possibly forcing those behind you to have to wait for you to finish. The 2nd largest lobster was tender and delicious. Lots of melted butter comes as well as cole slaw and chips. I ordered Classic Deviled Eggs ( no flavor ); and a roasted ear of corn - delicious. Can't beat the ocean and boats view. Even saw an employee cleaning the outdoor picnic tables between diners. Ok, one suggestion- please schedule more than 1 employee in the Dessert hut. I sadly got in line behind a multi family group and she was taking 5 mins per milkshake. After 15 mins, she only completed and handed out 3 milkshakes and they still had another 5 orders to go so I, and some other customers behind me, chose not to wait another 20+ mins for a dessert. Lost revenue. Overall- I was so glad to place Abbott's back on my list of great coastal Lobster dinners with enjoyable seaside views & experience from CT to Maine. Thank you and Great job...
Read moreThis place is beautiful. It is a true coastal CT location with a great view of a dock and the Sound. And thats where the positives stop. Come to Abbot’s for a true rip-off experience. Someone explain to me why a chunk of lobster smaller than my baby cousins palm costs $23 when placed on an average hamburger bun. But don’t forget the two pickles, the worst coleslaw I’ve ever eaten (if you thought coleslaw could get worse), and a bag of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips that are desperately added to save this meal from total disappointment. Now for the next victim of my review. The shrimp tacos. Imagine the tiniest pieces of shrimp topped with salad dressing on a flour roll. I rest my case. I was lucky enough to not try to mussels, but as my fellow food critic said “The sauce is sour and the garlic is not fresh” and “the butter is better than the sauce.” The oyster crackers were also stale. However, the mussels are fairly priced, which could be the only redeeming quality of the food at this place. My young cousin expressed her enjoyment of her mac&cheese but on further inspection, it seems to just be Kraft Mac&Cheese. While walking around this beautiful area, we saw this poor woman shucking the corn she bought herself over a trash-can. Thank goodness they don’t ask for tips for this sub-par customer service. If you’re ever in the Groton area looking for a nice place to eat seafood, stay home, cook your own food, and bring your dish to Abbott’s on the Rough to enjoy the location. If you do decide to order food, the only lasting memory you’ll have is the hole in your bank account after getting scammed by this defrauding...
Read moreWe made this our last stop on our trip to Mystic. I have seen this place on food shows and everyone says they have the best lobster roll. Check hours of operation before coming. Right now they have fall hours which are Friday through Sunday 11am to 7pm. Last day of the season is Columbus Day. They have a lot of parking, however, we came in October. I am going to assume the parking lot gets very crowded in the summer for their busy season.
It’s not fancy by any means. It’s a lobster shack with great outdoor seating and great food. You can sit on the dock or waterfront seating. There is seating indoors also. The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. One of the employees saw me taking a picture of the lobster tank and took one out so I can get a better picture. I didn’t ask, he offered which was very nice. He estimated it to be about 5 pounds.
The food was great. I started with lobster bisque. Very good price and delicious. My only criticism is that it did not have pieces of lobster chunks. Any great lobster bisque that I’ve had in the past has always had it. I also had the crab cakes. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. Also a very good price for two crab cakes. Finally I got to the lobster roll. When ordering, remember there are three different sizes. I mistakenly ordered the smaller one which I regretted later. It was hot and buttery when I got it. The butter dripped down into the plate as I took a bite. I don’t know if I would say it’s the best I’ve I ever had, but it’s right up there. The overall experience was great. A wonderful way to end our trip to Mystic. I highly recommend...
