On the Crunchy Side... American Bar and Eatery! — Restaurant in Harmony

Good food, skilled staff, nice facility. Tried the cheeseburger, cheese curds, mushroom soup, and a beer. Everything was prepared well. Experience was cordial. Years ago, the cheesecurds here were the best I ever tasted. They are different now, but good.

I understand the challenge and necessity for the establishment to make a profit, and some balance could help with that. A small-town business can further thrive by cultivating a healthy relationship with its community. For example, if a two-dollar additional charge to have cheese on a burger deters many customers from returning, perhaps that is a hindrance to profit.

The subtle traits of above-average starting prices, numerous additional charges, limited menu options, and below-average portion sizes all add up to deter some customers from making regular visits, who instead eat elsewhere where they feel more generously received. However, the high-quality food, ambiance, service, (and name) of On the Cruncy Side deserve great business, so I hope some more balance can help with that.

My family and I were greeted by a somewhat unfriendly wait person who didn't want to seat us because we were a group of 7 and we didn't have a reservation (over 6, we were told, had to call in). How were we to know that I ask! The place was maybe 1/3 full and it was a weekday. She did seat us after we told her we could go somewhere else. So much for Minnesota Nice! The menu is very limited and of course after I placed my order, she came back to say they just sold the last serving of their only non-meat option (and this was early dinner hour)! I ended up with chips and salsa and a side salad - not what I had imagined for dinner. When we got our bills, my sister had a $2 upcharge for using a credit card (their cost is about $0.53 per transaction). To their credit, apparently it is stated on the menu but it was not obvious. So there was the hassle of redoing and paying cash. There was an upcharge on my bill as well and I told her it would have been nice to know that ahead of time. All in all it was a somewhat tense and unpleasant experience and left a bad taste in my mouth - I doubt I will be eating...

Always like this place, the food was good and normally the service is very decent. I always Overlook the higher than normal prices because I figured I was getting something better then where you can get it anywhere else. Our last visit our server was unclear what the specials were for the night. And then he accidentally dropped a glass on the table which shattered. Shrapnel and the liquid covered my wife's body. She received one cut on her foot and it was a good little bleeder. Our server tried his best to get things cleaned up as quick as possible. And then right after he served the food we never seen him until the bill showed up. He was more than willing to comp overpriced draft beer. But unwilling to take anything off my wife's meal to compensate for her embarrassment and having to sit in cola wet clothes. It's going to be a long, long time before I set foot in that place again.
