Carter's Ice Cream — Restaurant in Haverhill

I think some New Englanders don't appreciate the extent to which they live in an ice-cream paradise: around here you can get locally-made ice cream from mom-and-pop stands that beats anything you can buy from a big national manufacturer hands down. Carter's is typically great; I'd say it's the best one in Haverhill.

It's only open seasonally and has no indoor seating, and the limited parking fills up fast in the summer, but it's on a hill and if you hang around to eat your ice cream you can treat yourself to gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside.

I have been going to Carter's for years. Love the Ice cream. But this years I had 2 complaints. First, Labor day week end I ordered a Large Coffee in a cup to split with wife. Got home and and opened it. The server didnt even attempt to pack it down when scooping it so I could slide the spoon down to the bottom all the way around the cup. When I took a spoon full off the top I could see the the bottom also. Couldn't have been more than a scoop and a half total. Not sure what happened to this place, maybe trying to save $, but 8 dollars for an ice cream which I would not mind paying if it was the quality it once was. The coffee actually has coffee ground in it! who wants gritty ice cream? Ok, so maybe it was just a mishap. We return this evening and the strawberry ice cream is now bright RED.. when I asked what the heck it was they said they were trying a 'new' company and its added food coloring to it! No thank you!
