Blue Dragon Tavern & Cosmic Musiquarium — Restaurant in Hawaii

Such a wonderful place for live music & dancing under the stars! Also great for just listening to the music & enjoying the atmosphere. If you knew the Blue Dragon from a few years ago, there has been a shift... It has been redefined as a live music (& dance) venue that happens to have food (pupus, aka appetizers), whereas in the past it was a full restaurant that happened to have live music. I've seen a number of great bands since they reopened this fall, including bands that have driven all the way from the other side of the island because everyone is so excited to have this wonderful venue open again! If you go to their website, you can see a calendar for the whole month of events and their Facebook page has updates for any last minute changes. I enjoyed the carnitas last night... Good fresh fish also. (The drinks are a bit expensive, but typical for pricing on the Kohala Coast.) There is now a cover charge, which ensures that the band gets paid a reasonable amount. In the past, this was a venue where dancers and music lovers would come and sometimes not buy any food or drinks, nor would they tip the band nor the servers for bringing them endless glasses of water! (Note to dancers & music lovers: If you find a place on the island without a cover charge, be sure to tip the band! And if you aren't having an alcoholic drink, order some food or a mock-tail or Coke, however tip your server well... She or he is still working just as hard bringing your beverage & food... Feb 15 dinner and show was a disaster. I would not recommend coming here.

We preordered food, arrived 15 minutes early, and were in the door right at 530, thinking our food order was already in. After checking with the waitress sometime later, we found out that was just for "a count" and not actually an order, so we had to place our order again.

Everyone around us who arrived after us got their food a long time before we did. It wasn't until 745 that two of our four dishes were finally brought out. And 30 minutes later, at 815, the second two dishes came out, only 15 minutes before the end of the show, so late we refused them.

Then it took 20 minutes and checked with two staff members to finally get the check and pay so we could leave.

If they can't serve what they take orders for, they shouldn't do food. The staff were all matter of fact "that's they way it is" clearly a management problem. This is a top-down issue. The service staff isn't being given the training and tools they need.

The musicians were good, but the sound system was full of background noise and mis adjusted.

Overall, the Blue Dragon seems like it peaked a couple of decades ago and is dying a slow, painful death unless someone overhauls the management and...

We worked with Dave and his team at Blue Dragon to host our wedding ceremony in August of 2023. The entire experience was pleasant from all of the initial calls and emails to the days leading up to the wedding. Dave was accommodating, professional, and extremely helpful throughout the process. As a bonus, we were able to hire his band, Uncle Charlie, to play during our cocktail hour and reception.

The venue was perfect for our reception and all of the guests and vendors raved about the open-air bar experience as well as the service from the bartenders and music from the band.

Pricing was more than fair and we felt we received top-notch customer service and value. We couldn't have been happier with how the night went and it was wonderful to support a local venue so close to my wife's family's residence and business. Can't recommend them enough if you have a...
