Long review… Disappointed. Let me lead with we have been here 10+ times and absolutely love the food, service and atmosphere and were expecting more of the same tonight. We had a 4:15 reservation that we had made a month in advance. We knew it would probably be the busiest night of the year and were expecting it to be busy. That was the case when we left, but not when we were there. The food, excellent as always, other than the dessert, keep reading if want to know more… The staff very much disappointing and the low light of the experience. Right when we got there, we were at the host stand for a good couple of minutes before someone came out. Once the host made it out, we gave her our name and she confirmed for the patio. Mind you, it was 90 degrees out and we had two guests over 80 and two under 3 years old. But, we thought there’s a breeze and the patio is mostly covered by an awning, so we’ll be okay. We proceeded out and she led us to the one table in full sun. We had asked if we could sit somewhere else and she said that the rest of the restaurant was booked and this was the table set for a party our size. Now, unless 90% of the reservations just didn’t make it, that was not the case. The whole restaurant was maybe 10% full when we got there and 40% full by when we left at 5:30. Plus, there was probably 15-20 feet of unused awning space between our tables and the others. But whatever, so we accepted the table, which we later regretted, as my grandma ended up hyperventilating from the heat, and our toddler had to go inside multiple times to cool down. We then asked the host if she could bring us a high chair and she said sure. We waited a good 5 minutes to where the water boy came and was wondering what we were standing around for. My wife then had to go inside, where multiple staff members were standing around and asked them “can I grab this high chair”. Not one asking if they could help, but is what is. So that was the hostess issue we had. Our server got to the table, took our drink order and within 3-4 minutes, came back and asked if we were ready to order. At that point, we were starting to feel rushed. We then told her no, we’d like to order an appetizer and continue to look over the menu. And that’s when we started to pick up something just seemed off with the vibe of the staff we had encountered. She brought our appetizer and food as said above was excellent. The serving after the initial food order was mediocre and money was left on the table, as not once did we get asked if we would like another beverage. The weather was hot and quite frankly ruined the meal, the butter for the bread melted within a couple minutes of sitting there. The entrees were delicious, but not after a couple minutes of sitting in the hot sun. This is all while we were staring at a half empty restaurant on the inside and a patio that 80% empty wondering why we were sitting in the one spot in the sun. The dessert for my wife’s birthday, strawberry shortcake was mediocre and seemed like it was just pulled from the freezer. The biscuits were half frozen and hard still. All and all, I’m sure we will be back eventually, but this left a bad experience in our mouth and maybe we just held this place too high of standard. The staff could tell we were not content, but gave very little consideration in any way to make the experience better, the bill after tip, was close to $60 an adult. But again, maybe we just expected too much based on past experiences. Hoping better the next time, but staff needs some work. Almost seemed like everybody was edge, as if there was a contentious meeting right before open. It just left a sour taste seeing the restaurant not absolutely full, but being put in the absolute worst spot in the house with very little consideration to put us in a better spot or make the...
Read moreThis restaurant has been open for years, my wife used to come here with her family since she was a baby so as I had never tried it before we deduced to visit it for dinner. It was a little emotional for her as her dad passed away last year and this was a place they used to visit together. We were not expecting what was going to happen that night. As soon as we got in I felt everyone was staring at us (we were very casual looking, but not bad looking), we wait for a few minutes until they got us a table and we started to read the menu. There’s not that many options however we knew this as the restaurant is famous for it “All you can eat shrimp” so my wife decided to have an order of 6 fried shrimps, I wanted the all you can eat shrimp and our friend wanted another all you can eat shrimp. The waitress came to take the order so I let my wife go first “I want a 6 fried shrimp basket please” then my turn “I want an all you can eat fried shrimp” and at that moment the waitress with a rude tone answer “you can’t order 6 shrimp and the other person an all you can eat shrimp”, my wife is very little she would only eat 3/4 shrimps tops, so we asked why we couldn’t order an she explained us that it is a rule that they have (again with an attitude and not very friendly customer service) so we say let’s just order two all you can eat shrimp and one stake and at this point the waitress said that she knows that my wife would eat some of the shrimp and that’s not possible and it would be better if we leave and she started to raise her voice, it was so ridiculously rude, I never seen anything like that (at least in Michigan) and more knowing that the owners know my wife and her family since she is a baby. We tarted to get up and leave and the waitress follow us to the exit insulting us (yes, that happened) until the owner asked her to stop and leave us alone, then she apologized for the way the the waitress treated us, however she didn’t offer us to stay or find a solution so from there we went to another restaurant where they treated us excellent and I left the waitress a really good tip for her help and understanding. Very disappointed of the way that Argonne treated us and it makes me feel that they just didn’t one to serve us since the moment we entered the establishment. Maybe it...
Read moreAbsolutely disappointed and horrified with our experience this evening. At 5:15 we were seated at the bar; myself, two year old and family friend to the left of another family with a young boy. The bartender barely greeted us then scoffed at us sitting there making a ridiculous statement saying, “children can’t sit here past 6pm, I mean 5pm” (it wasn’t 6pm… what is it lady?? 5 or 6??). We ordered two dirty martinis and she didn’t even give us time to order my sons soda before storming off and coming back forever later with no waters and just poorly made martinis. Of course my son protested wondering where his drink was and instead of getting something for him she loudly apologized to “regular” older couples at the bar for my family sitting there which made us incredibly uncomfortable. We ordered a bottle of $135 Cabernet from the bar back because she was the only one that came around, got us water, tools our dinner orders, my son a soda in a children’s cup, or gave any type of SERVICE. In fact, SHE was wonderful. Being born, raised and buying a home in Charlevoix it was a devastating experience especially because since their remodel they have Peri Peri Chicken on the menu and after spending time in South Africa it was exciting for me to find a local favorite in my home town. If you’re a nice family I highly recommend Grey Gables. The food is better, the service is WONDERFUL, and they care about families there.. I’m...
