Herschel's Restaurant — Restaurant in Henderson

The food was okay but the service brings it down to a 1 star.

Stopped in after a visitation at the funeral home across the street. Placed an order for myself and my husband and ordered two drinks. She never repeated my order and asked me if I needed a drink with one of the meals and I said yes so she added a third drink and paid with my debit card.

As I filled my cups I looked at my receipt and saw she had charged me for three drinks. I wasn’t mad but was wishing she would have read me my order back so it wouldn’t have happened. I got back in line and she had one other customer at the counter that appeared to be her family member or friend by the way they we laid across the counter talking to one another and she didn’t seem to care that I was in line again. Now they were just visiting and that didn’t sit well with me. I told her about the mistake and she said she was crediting my card back and it would take a few days to show back up and gave me a slip of paper. It was late and I’d been at a funeral visitation and we had a drive back to Tyler so I stuck it in my purse and we ate and left. I waited for days for the charge to show back up on my account and it never did. After a week I called back to ask how long it takes and they said it shouldn’t be that long and I could come in and get the money but since I’m in Tyler it isn’t worth it.

Today I cleaned out my purse and see the cashier actually cashed it out. Makes me think she pocketed the money. It’s only $3 but that’s not cool. The customer service was already lacking so I don’t think anyone can convince me tris was by accident.

I have been to Herschel's many times in my life. It has always been a favorite of mine. This past time through Henderson left me craving one of their hamburgers. I had a relative comment about how ownership had changed. That usually isn't a good thing. But I didn't let it deter me as I headed there on my way out of town, wanting to feast on a one of a kind burger. I placed my order, always the same. Cheeseburger, fries and a drink. I was shocked when my meal cost me over $10 with tax. This maybe expected in big cities but fast food eateries usually top out at $8 with tax. Nothing I couldn't afford but I know the hard-working folks of Henderson probably couldn't afford that regularly. The inside of the building hasn't changed for years and I like the small country diner feel although it is a pretty descent sized place. I couldn't give Herschel's a 4 or 5 star because the price was too high and the burger I ate was a far cry from the wonderfully, amazing, burger with soggy bun that we're all used too. (The buns always turn sorry at the bottom because Herschel's uses a mayo that's a bit watery--still delicious.) The burger I ate, although decent, didn't live up to even the one I had 2 years ago and definitely wasn't worth the price I paid. Then, I was given curly fries that had a bit of seasoning on them instead of their known hand-cut fries laden with grease. Probably healthier in the end, but this is comfort food. Not health food. I want a bit of grease on the side and the oil soaking through the bag. Eat here to say you did but just know it isn't near what...

Young gentlemen taking orders was awesome, very friendly & thanked us as well when we were leaving, very polite. The food was not great. Hubby was starving & ordered the 6 piece steak basket. I wasn't hungry & ordered the 4 chicken basket. Orders apparently got mixed up b/c I got a 6 piece chicken while my hubby got a 4 piece steak. His steak & fries were good just not enough for a hungry guy. In my chicken basket I believe there was about 3 pieces (two I gave my hubby) that were nice & meaty, the others were all very hard batter that was not even chewable, most of my onion rings were good but some had very tough onions. Then there was the drinks, Dr. Pepper & sweet tea is about all I drink. Dr. Pepper was awful & sweet tea was not good & sour as well. Finished up with lemonade which wasn't good either. We have eaten here before while in Henderson & the food/drinks are normally good but just...
