Our recent experience at Curts Family Restaurant in Markleysburg, PA left us utterly dismayed and deeply dissatisfied. The combination of lackluster food, disrespectful service, and a series of baffling inconsistencies made for an evening that was far from enjoyable. Food Quality and Taste: The food was shockingly bland and unimpressive, falling far short of any expectations. Every dish tasted mediocre and lacked any remarkable flavors. To our disappointment, even the attempt to be environmentally conscious fell flat at Curts Family Restaurant. The paper straws provided were ineffective, quickly deteriorating and becoming unusable. The rolls used to be brought out to the table with every meal but now you have to request them, and then the rolls were brought out cold. Still tasty but most restaurants serve hot bread...
Waitstaff Behavior: The waitress named Berta displayed an astonishingly rude and unwelcoming attitude. Instead of providing courteous service, she seemed to go out of her way to make us uncomfortable.
Inconsistent Seating Policy: We were informed that our two-year-old children couldn't sit on our laps, and chairs couldn't be placed at the end of the table. This rule, however, was selectively enforced, as another couple with children were allowed to disregard it, causing chaos. Despite our group being reprimanded for minor child-related issues, another couple's child was allowed to run amok without any consequences or intervention from the staff.
Frozen Salad Bar and Indifferent Response: The salad bar was stocked with frozen items, demonstrating a clear disregard for quality and freshness. When we informed the waitress, she dismissively responded with a mere "yep," showing complete apathy.
Lack of Coordination, Rudeness and Unprofessional Communication: When inquiring about our to-go order, a different waitress responded rudely, claiming she wasn't responsible for our table. Her dismissive behavior added to the already frustrating experience. And then instead of approaching us directly, Berta yelled across the room to announce our order was placed. This lack of professionalism further compounded the unpleasant experience.
Incorrect Billing and Argumentative Attitude: One person in our group was charged the price of an adult meal, despite ordering a children's portion. When we brought this up with Berta, she engaged in an argument and refused to adjust the price, using a flimsy excuse about the size of the portion. For background they were out of Pasta sauce but the child who ordered it (was clearly a child) didnât want the pasta sauce anyway, so we proceeded to order the pasta plain. Which was honestly about .45cents worth of pasta. So even after that they still charged the price as if it was an adult meal.
Deceptive Tip Handling: In light of receiving abysmal service, we chose not to leave a tip due to the overall poor experience. To our shock, Berta apparently took it upon herself to add a tip to our bill without our consent, and the bank confirmed the unauthorized charge.
When confronted about it about it the waitress printed off another receipt showing the initial charge. It wasnât until about 2 hours later the bank showed the corrected amount. This was very clearly a disgruntled employee taking it upon herself to commit fraud despite her shortcomings as a waitress.
Throughout our visit, there was no sign of management presence or willingness to address the numerous issues we faced. This lack of accountability speaks volumes about the establishment's disregard for customer satisfaction.
In summary, our visit to this restaurant was an absolute disaster. From the tasteless food and inconsistent policies to the rude staff and deceitful practices, it was an evening of disappointment and frustration. We strongly advise anyone considering dining here to look elsewhere for a more enjoyable experience. Berta you get NO STARS. Curtâs family Restaurant you get 1 star but only because your rolls are decent. Donât go here pick...
Read moreIt's Easter Sunday, and I get that the staff was probably a little peeved to be working when most folks were off enjoying their holiday. My family and I went on a hike at Jumonville, and stopped on our way back to Uniontown. It was about 2:45. The sign out front said "Open". There was nothing about closing time, etc., so we thought we were okay. The "hostess" (I use that term loosely) met us at the door, and quickly let us know that she was doing us a favor by letting us in, and told us that we would be the last people served for the day. The buffet was our only option, and that would be closing down soon. That wasn't a big deal for us. We could deal with that. The waitress took our drink order and sent us to the buffet. She never offered us bread, even though all of the other patrons remaining had baskets on their tables. Supposedly they are famous for their rolls, but I guess we'll never know why. All the food on the buffet looked good. Unfortunately we didn't have time to try everything. We were reminded LOUDLY several times that they were getting ready to close - directly AND indirectly by ALL of the waitresses. We were actually watched - I mean STARED at as we gulped our food down to get out of their way. After one plate, the hostess came over and told us again that they were going to shut the buffet down in five minutes. My husband and daughter rushed over to get some mashed potatoes and dessert, and one of the servers actually shut the lights off over the food while my husband was trying to get his. They were extremely rude and unprofessional, but they had no problem charging us full price for everything. I know the hostess could sense that I was upset, and she offered to get us some dessert to go. At that point I was so put off by all of their attitudes toward us I just wanted to leave. I had no interest in sticking around - or God forbid, putting them out any more than we already had. Why didn't they just tell us that they were closing, and couldn't seat anyone else? I would have rather to have been turned away than treated the way we were. Even though the food was good I would never go back. I hope they all got out of there quickly, and made their way to wherever they were in such a hurry to go. It was certainly more important than making five potential repeat customers...
Read moreWe entered, sat ourselves and noticed the breakfast buffet was still steaming, and full of food. It was after 1pm, but it looked appetizing. I walked closer to view it better, and a waitress walked over to the other side holding a plate and started dishing up food. I assumed she was on a break and getting to eat. Then she said to me, "they are going to start taking it down any minute, so you won't be able to have any". I went back to my table and told the other 3 people I was with, and we were disappointed, and wondering why the cook stocked it with fresh food if they were tearing it down? Then after we ordered our lunch items instead, a couple walked over to the breakfast bar, that had NOT been torn down yet, and they grabbed plates and started dishing up! Then that same waitress walked over to them and said "it's past the time, you can eat all you want, on the house, before they tear it down!" They each piled on 2 plates full. Then, when my husband was paying at the register, the waitress asked my husband if she should add the tip to the credit card. He is hard of hearing and asked "what?". I was offering help to my husband by answering her "the tip is on the table ". She (Amber) flashed me a look, a rude bit_h look, that nearly caused me to demand the manager. Not once did they tear down the breakfast bar, but they apparently only allow some people to eat it, and free. And by the way, I SPLIT a Reuben sandwich with my husband....worst Reuben I ever had. And ice tea was over 3 dollars each. That's water and a tea bag, folks. Robbery! Oh and a service charge for using a credit or debit card isn't fair, especially for those of us who order 4 iced teas. That's about 13 dollars profit you already got from me. My bill before tip came to 60.92....4 iced teas, 3 lunch sandwiches....horrible service....rude waitress....carpet was years old, stained, smelled....worst reuben.... So, I see a TON of complaints about this place, nothing has changed. It's a wonder they still have customers. I guess they are surviving from tourists just passing through, or the famous family name that USED to be so good. I wish I had read reviews before we went! Not only a disappointment, but I left there feeling angry about how I was treated! Not how I wanted to spend 60 bucks! Do yourself a favor. Go...
