New China Restaurant — Restaurant in Hiawatha

Last year, we drove from San Francisco to Michigan to visit our children living on the east and west coasts. In order to avoid the highway, we chose the less busy road US 36. On August 18, 2023, we arrived at Kansas Hiawatha about 2 pm. Because we were hungry, we were looking for a place to have lunch. At this time we saw this restaurant with a sign written in Chinese. When we entered, I was very surprised. Because this appearance of this restaurant reminded me a lot of the Chinese restaurants near New York 40 years ago. Today, you can no longer see this very old-fashion Chinese restaurants any more on the East Coast. The owners were very happy to see us. They told us that there used to be two Chinese restaurants here, but now they are the only one. And they are the only two Chinese in this place. If they want to take a vacation, they will have to go back to New York. There, they have their relatives and friends. I felt a little sad when I heard that. The owners work very hard, and really do deserve a break - but they need to train a lot more on customer service before leaving teens alone to run their restaurant. The food is always great, but I’ve never received such terrible service here. The girl corrected me with an attitude, rather than explaining the difference between items - later trying to say that she did explain (there was no explanation) when being told that’s not what we thought we ordered based on the menu description (after someone had to go and find her). She didn’t check on us until we had finished and been sitting there for over 10 minutes (with empty glasses for most of the party for long before finishing) we didn’t see her for most of the time - when she did come she just asked if we needed anything else - not asking how everything was or how we’d like our check.
