First of all I am a lover of Poke. I eat poke about three times a week. I've tried pretty much all the poke on Oahu, including all the grocers, restaurants and take-out joints.
This is the best Poke joint in Oahu, hands down. The Ahi is always incredibly fresh. The seasonings are spot on. The point of difference at ONO is the rice. For white rice, they unusually use jasmine rice - but its cooked so perfectly fluffy that it just matches so well to the moist and flavorful seasonings of the fish. For brown rice they use japanese genmai, which isn't hard or dry at all - in fact it tastes as good as japanese white rice. Pretty amazing for a healthier choice.
You know this is good because its kinda in the middle of nowhere, in a very quiet neighborhood strip mall where there is basically nothing else. Yet, they will have a line of people coming in for lunch pretty much any day. Most people are taking out - but they have some outdoor seating under shade, so it's easy to enjoy straight away.
I highly recommend the Shohu Ahi / Spicy Ahi combination. Get some tako (octopus) as a side order. And get some Sea Asparagus if you want to try something surprising. It's a great little condiment to eat with or...
Read moreIf you're a seafood lover, then Ono Seafood is a must visit destination! Not easily found but well worth the drive. This no-frills eatery is known for its fresh, delicious poke bowls. The poke bowls are made-to-order, and you can customize them to your personal tastes. My favorites are the Spicy Ahi and Hawaiian Style Tako. The ahi was incredibly fresh and melt-in-your-mouth tender, with just the right amount of seasoning as to not over power the fish. While the tako was nice and soft. I found the staff to be friendly, attentive and extremely helpful. The guy was even able to check in the back to see if they had Lomi Ahi, returning with a small container that I immediately purchased (love pouring my favorite chili pepper water on top and eating it straight from...
Read moreThe perfect quick meal after snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, or hiking Koko head. Excellent poke bowls with quintessential “island” flavors. The ingredients were well selected and executed with everything from the amount of “heat”, saltiness, flavor blends, and even the type of rice served in their (plastic/to go) “bowl” being “just right”. Will definitely be a repeat visitor during this trip to Oahu. P.s. as an added bonus, on your way back to the main road back to Honolulu, take Lunalilo Home road and stop at the Leonard’s Bakery truck for some warm custard Malasadas to snack on during the drive...
