We were in town for business today. Both ordered $14.99 "Pike Steak Dinners"--higher cost of meal for a small diner-type restaurant, but boss was paying because we'd gone out of our way for company, so we'd earned a steak. I asked waitress if the steak here was good-- she said, yes, very good--lots of people order it. Soon she came to table, said there was only one dinner steak left, would we mind if they used the sandwich steak on one? I asked, was it good? She said, yes it's real good and a little thicker than the dinner steak. What could we say? No, I guess we didn't mind. We asked what kind of bread-- rolls? No, Italian bread. OK-- and after we left, we realized, she never brought any bread at all! Both steaks were ordered medium-well, we asked for some pink inside-is that medium-well to her?. Waitress said, yes, that is medium-well. Both steaks came--both thin, dry and done all brown. His was on the plate alone, no gravy, no garnish--1 piece of dried brown steak on 1/2 an oval white plate. His sides were peas and cottage cheese--both served on separate applesauce-sized small bowls ($14.99!) Husband was starved, he slathered it in A-1 sauce and ate it . The taste of mine (supposedly the last dinner steak) was bland, dry (NO juices at all-NONE) and it had a frozen/thawed taste and looked exactly like my husband's "sandwich" steak! I will say, the scoop of mashed potatoes did taste fresh from the box. I did have 2 or 3 small bites of it. After a couple bites of the meat, I couldn't attempt the tiny bowl of broccoli. I'd lost my appetite. I apologized, told her I'm sorry, I can't eat this--I don't want this. I really did not want to hurt anyone's feelings and told her that. The waitress insisted no one ever sent the steak back--everyone liked it and she seemed a bit insulted, so I didn't want to chance ordering something else. I drank my coffee (it was very good!) Husband finished his food, we both finished coffee, got the bill, yes she took the one meal off, but his, the "sandwich steak" wasn't repriced. His meal was exactly: peas (maybe 3 heaping tablespoons), cottage cheese and piece of dry thin brown steak, still called Pike Steak Meal--$14.99! When paying (no owner in sight-another waitress checked us out), I explained about the use of "sandwich steak", and asked how the dry steak small peas and cottage cheese came to $$14.99? She looked at me and said, 'You already got the other meal off the bill', I replied, "I couldn't eat it!" By then, our waitress came over and again repeated how no one ever returned their steaks! Feeling ganged up upon, we just wanted out of this dive! So we left--glad to get away from these people. And we have already began to warn co-workers! We went in the place in such a good mood, but left really disappointed and kind of amazed at the experience. Eating out is part of the job and it's been years since we've had such a dinner experience, so our advice....STEER CLEAR OF SHELLEY'S PIKE DINER INN on Pike Rd north of Washington, PA...
Read moreIt's not the Pike Inn anymore. The sign over the door is the same but it's under new owners. It's not even close to the same as it used to be. I stopped for breakfast. It had been a long time since my last visit. I should have known something was wrong as it was breakfast time and there were 2 cars in the lot. Then after going inside I immediately noticed all of the pictures and car memorabilia signs that used to grace the walls were in a pile inside and to the left of the door. Odd. I thought to myself maybe they took them down to paint or something like that. Looking around it did look like new paint. OK. Sat at a table and a man asked me what I wanted to drink. Ordered OJ. 5 minutes later he brought it and a menu, set it on the table and walked away. He stood at the counter talking to the only two other customers who were drinking coffee and not eating. I was ready to order and he stood there talking. Finally he took my order. Eggs over easy, home fries, sausage patty and toast. At least a 15 minute wait for the food was annoying. As I said, I was the only one getting food. Finally, the food came. The good news? A very full plate for sure. The bad news? Everything. Toast with no butter. Eggs were runny. Not over easy. Homefries were undercooked in God knows what and bland. Just horrible. The worst? The sausage was a patty all right. It was about 10" long by 1 1/2' wide and very spicy. I've never seen anything like it in a diner anywhere. Oh, and the OJ was unsweetened and tasted old. I ate one egg, one piece of toast, 2 bites of sausage, 2-3 homefries and 2 sips of OJ and it cost over $15. I didn't include the tip because there wasn't one and there won't ever be. I won't be going back there again. Just a terrible experience. My...
Read moreI’ve been eating at Pike in for years. I know it’s under new ownership so decided to stop in Thursday for dinner. It was my first time since the pandemic. I ordered the Italian breakfast which I had on occasions before. The waitress took our order and was then busy chatting with the girls behind the counter. I waited at least 15 minutes before she brought my coffee. She only brought it after I was finally able to get her attention and remind her. I understand she may have forgotten. Later I had to ask when our order would be ready. The restaurant was not busy and others arriving after us has been served. Finally when the two meals arrived my eggs were cold the toast was limp buttered bread , it wasn’t even toasted. The waitress never returned to the table once she was more occupied chatting. Finally when I asked for the check I told er that I was very unsatisfied with the meal. She responded really! She returned our change and we left. It is poor service like this that can negatively effect a business. This manner could have been easily avoided if proper procedures were in place. Sorry to say I would be very hesitant to return. With businesses trying to recover from the pandemic I’m surprised with the procedures they have...
