This is quite literally the best bakery around - they rotate pastries, their bagels and breads are always incredible, and folks are always friendly. I frequent this place a few times a week, rave to everyone that they need to come here, and am more enticed to pick a dish on a local restaurant menu if it has "Two Sons Bakehouse" on it. Saying alll that, for the last few months I've gotten pastries here that are over-baked on the outside - which is such a bummer! The beautiful flakey butter crust just isn't there - that crust is often dull and dark. All of which is such a massive shame! Combos of flavors are on point, the dough is definitely on point (moist on the inside, fillings are really flavorful), but often times the outside of the pastry is overcooked - it has that bitter taste, while the texture on the inside is doughy instead of flakey. I frequent this bakery throughout the week - sometimes just after they open at 6, other times later, between 8-10am+, and this is still a problem, so it appears to be not related to time-of-day. I.e. If these folks are reheating day-old pastries then that could definitely explain what's going on, but I'm honestly not sure if it is that simple (and I'm not going to pretend I have the answer). In the end, I still give this bakehouse 5 stars, knowing that when it does produce high-quality and properly chilled and well-timed pastry, it reminds me of breakfasts in Southern France - there's literally nothing better. Read moreWe’ve been to Two Sons many times over the last couple of years, and while I’ve experienced some of the concerns noted in other reviews as well in the past, it seems like they’ve got the all kinks worked out. I also want to note that most of what we’ve experienced in the past have always seemed entirely due to labor shortages, which everyone in this area unfortunately suffers from.
However, we’ve gone several times for dinner these last few weeks and the food/experience has been ABSOLUTELY wonderful, every single time. Seems to me that you can order anything on the menu and be very pleased with what arrives from the kitchen. We had some really great cocktails as well. We recently also tried their pizza for takeout for the first time and were on the verge of shocked with how good it was. Cooked perfectly, awesome ingredients and different options than other places in town which we greatly appreciate! Sometimes my wife and I just set out in our 20-year-old Z4 BMW and tonight was one of those nights we ended up at 2 Sons Bake House Restaurant in Hyde Park a bit of a trip from our home on Lake Champlain. How serendipitous because we knew we wanted something different, someplace new but we were blown away at 2 Sons. The food is artistically presented and the entries were paired beautifully and they even tasted better than they looked which was hard to imagine. I had a Flank Steak with Fiddleheads and garlic roasted potatoes, my wife had Monk Fish with a citrus sauce and a coconut citrus quinoa Their homemade high-end desserts were almost too much after such a great meal! If you are a foodie, trust us there is little if nothing that surpasses it in Stowe or Waterbury, even Hen of the Woods!
