Mango Taphouse and Gastropub was my absolute favorite restaurant in Vieques! This is probably going to be a long review, so if you don’t want to read anymore, I will emphasize-MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE- in Vieques.
Mango is located in neither hub of the island. It is closer to Esperanza (Southwest hub on the Caribbean) than Isabelle Secundo (Northeast hub in the Atlantic).
Our first of three meals eaten at Mango was on a Monday. It was a lovely overall experience. Dawn greeted us at the front door and seated us. Dawn was also our server. She was the consummate professional and anticipated our every need. On our second visit, Dawn was again our server and she remembered my drink order (iced coffee, half milk, light sugar) from the week before. She also had such an engaging personality that she made the entire experience magical.
The first thing we ate was the house made potato chips with caramelized onion dip. They were so delicious that I could have eaten them all on this first visit, but I’m glad I held back! I had the coconut rice bowl with added avocado. It was beautifully presented, with fresh fruit and vegetables that I came across nowhere else on the island. The entire dish was vegan, including the outstanding peanut dressing. My husband had the fried shrimp and French fries, which were apparently awesome. We had plenty left to take back to our apartment.
Note: We wanted to go back to Mango the next day (Tuesday) and were (nearly) devastated to see that they were not open! Mango is open Friday through Monday.
SO Friday on our second visit, we had Dawn as our server again. I had no room for dessert the first time, but I was intrigued by the desserts listed, so while my husband had the house-made potato chips with caramelized onion dip a second time, I had the BAVARIAN CREAM FILLED CHURROS WITH RASPBERRY AND DARK CHOCOLATE DIPPING SAUCES!!!! If you enjoy sweets more than other food, and are only able to go to Mango one time, I highly suggest eating dessert first!
My husband had the same fried shrimp and French fries again. I ate an excellent house made black bean burger. By the way, the potato chips reheated beautifully, as did the churros, shrimp, fries, and black bean burger. My husband tasted my leftover “dessert as an appetizer” churros and agreed it was the best of many desserts on the island.
Our third visit was the next Monday, and our second to last day on the island. Dawn was not there, but the bartender who greeted us and also served us was also delightful and attentive. I am sorry I did not get his name. The bartender/greeter/server and I realized that we both grew up near Nashville, Tennessee!
My husband had chicken wings and onion rings, and I ate the coconut bowl with avocado again. I loved the churros so much that we got an order to go. I was so intent on my coconut bowl that I did not ask about his wings and onion rings.
My husband also had a Puerto Rican-made beer with all his meals. He described what he wanted as a “beer that doesn’t taste like beer,” but more like fruit. Dawn told him her recommendations and she was spot on. I wish I could remember the name of the beer, but Dawn remembered what he liked and he requested “the same one as I had last time.” When the fellow from Middle Tennessee served us, my husband described the beer and he (the bartender-server) knew what he was referring to. If you are a beer aficionado who likes trying different things, you...
Read moreI am writing this review as I am sitting on the wonderful outside deck at Mango Taphouse! This is one of my last nights on the island and I am excited to have one last meal from this place! I definitely had a hard time figuring out what I wanted tonight because everything is amazing! I had heard about Mango Tap House from a friend and decided to make it my first stop once I got to the island. After the first meal, I was hooked! The staff were super friendly and very welcoming, the rice bowl and homemade potato chips were fantastic and the mai tai was on-point! I tried quite a few other places in Vieques, but I kept coming back to have more meals at Mango and let me tell you, none of them were disappointing! The coconut shrimp are gigantic and the best I have ever had! The mac and cheese and the chicken wings are the perfect comfort food that just hits the spot if you’re looking for a little taste of home! One of my favorite things about Mango is that they also support the local brewery and rum distillery, so not only can you get the beer and mixed drinks you know and love from home, but you also get the chance to try some of the tasty beers and drinks from Vieques!
I could go on and on about this place, but my food has arrived and I am going to sit and enjoy!
Mango Taphouse makes you feel like you’re at home and with the wonderful people that work there and the delightful food, once you eat there, you will go back for more!
The owners Shawn and Paula have a great thing going and I wish them nothing but success! I will be back to Vieques for another trip and I will definitely stop by Mango to say hello and grab a bite to...
Read moreWe are a Puerto Rican family of four not super talkative but appreciative of an inviting atmosphere. This is a super cool traditional house of our previous Puerto Rican generations. Breezy in August hot weather. Wanted to love it after the raving reviews but this one was a miss. Too “touristy” feel, too “not Puerto Rican” menu and blah mood by owners on a Monday afternoon. Also, rice and beans were not available and that was a huge bummer. I must say all the food ordered… chicken and shrimp tasted good and fresh but took so long after as soon as we sat I ordered my kids food to avoid this very same thing. In one of our plates we tried to exchange fries for another side, since we had already ordered truffle fries as appetizer but our host was in such a hurry and kind of distracted as well that did not paid us any attention… so we ended up we three plates of fries. The host was ok but just as the owners not genuinely cared and so overall we did not feel welcomed. If you are looking for local atmosphere and hospitality this is not the place. Don’t miss Rancho Choli, El Plaza, Rising...
