I really wanted to rave about going here. From the reviews and recommendations, I was really thinking I was going to be lucky enough to experience a burger to dream of for days. Sadly, it was not the case. Purely going off food alone (including the fact there are no fries as an option... Seriously, a burger place without fries offered AT ALL even crappy from frozen bag, fries) it was an OK experience. The burger was smaller than I expected for over $8 (especially considering there were no fries and this was not a "combo" price). The burger was greasy, not juicy (there is a difference), and while it did have a good texture and it was prepared well, the meat lacked any real flavor to it. Cheese was processed American and bread was nothing spectacular, probably brought at grocery aisle. Onions were fresh, and tasty. Cook did an extraordinary job with what she was working with and was extremely friendly, + 1 star just for that. Counter sales girl was uninterested in anything, seemingly. It is check or cash only, but no complaints there as I know fees for debit and CC dip into profits and hassle, but an FYI. We drove from Springtown, again due to recommendations, because there's not a great burger place there (Old Fashioned is a joke). If I lived in Jacksboro I would go back when I wanted a burger, but that's about it. For a place that does nothing but burgers (almost literally), I...
Read moreWe’ve been eating Herd burgers since 1985. We lived about 75 miles away from Jacksboro, but we made the trip just for a burger a few times a year. We took many of our friends to this terrific place. They always enjoyed their burgers. When we go to other places, they just don’t live up to the great burgers we always enjoyed at Herd’s. Unfortunately, 3 weeks ago we had a bad experience. Our burgers were not delicious, they were bland and dry. We were disappointed, but decided that maybe there was a new cook or something. Today, we returned for another try. We were disappointed again. I didn’t finish mine because it just had no taste. I decided to ask the staff if something had recently changed. I was told that they had changed meat. I think they may have meant that they had a new supplier, I’m not sure. I gave them 3 stars because of the many years of yummy burgers. The burgers there were so good, you didn’t need fries! We plan to give them one more try in a few months. If we don’t get the Herd burger we love, we will not be back and will no longer recommend it to our friends. Please, please, please, to the person in charge of food quality, go back to the original way of making your burgers. Coca Cola tried New Coke and it...
Read moreWe made a point to stop here on a road trip and I regret that. The burger was just ok, and you'd expect it to be great since that's literally all they serve. They don't serve fries, only snack size chip bags if you're looking for a side. No fountain drinks just bottles and cans. Which might be okay if they offered seating but they only have 2 or 3 outdoor tables. So if it's summertime in Texas and you're on a road trip, you're likely stuck eating in your vehicle. The staff seemed to hate life and barely notice customers existed, despite the cramped, old building being so full of customers that we had to wait outside for our food. In reading about this place, I was looking forward to supporting a long history of family business making great burgers in their historic home. That is not what you're getting. You're getting a mediocre burger in a rundown house, poor customer service, and no where to sit and eat, making for an inconvenient pitstop. This may be a burger for locals that can take it home to eat, but I certainly can't recommend it for...
