Went to Drift for breakfast on Sunday 10/18. Arrived around 7:45 and there weren’t many people there as it was early on a Sunday. Ordered one of their specialty dishes—short rib hash. Service was prompt and friendly and if this review were solely on that I would give the place a 5, but everything else just brings the rating down. The dish was $13, and most of the breakfast choices were this price and higher. I don’t mind paying more for breakfast, but I expect the food to be excellent. I mean, if you’re going to charge that much for breakfast then it better be good, right?
So, I found out that the hash doesn’t come with toast (all other breakfasts did). Add $4 for two slices of toast! Add $4 for a coffee! Not a specialty coffee, just your standard morning coffee. That brought the bill up to $24 for one person when tax was added. My food arrived and I was a little perplexed because it didn’t look like hash. When I order roast beef or corned beef hash, it’s usually diced potatoes and diced meat mixed together. Now maybe it’s a regional thing—I’m from the Midwest and this is Florida, but I’ve had hash for breakfast at other places and it comes as I described above. This hash looked like a short rib dinner with potato wedges with two eggs on top. It was a chunk of meat that I had to cut with a knife, on top of potato wedges and some thin slices of assorted peppers in the middle of the dish. I thought, oh well—it looks good anyway—just not what I was expecting for breakfast.
The food tasted good, but the entire dish was lukewarm. Nothing on my plate was hot! I get the toast and it’s not buttered—ok fine, they brought butter with it, I can appreciate that. But my toast was cold! Cold toast! So the butter didn’t melt at all. The bread was very tasty as was the food. I can’t complain about quality or taste. But I like my food hot and my toast hot so that the butter will melt. So it was such a disappointing breakfast for $24. Again, this was just for me. We did not return to the restaurant for the remainder of our stay and I can’t recommend this place for breakfast at all. It’s ridiculously priced for food that isn’t hot and doesn’t include toast with it. $4 for a coffee is absurd also.
The ambiance is nice. It’s decorated beautifully with lots of sunlight and windows. But the food is disappointing.
We did have a couple visits to the bar and our experience there was nothing but excellent every time. All the bartenders we had were friendly and service was great. We enjoyed our time there and recommend having a drink or two there, especially during happy hour. But the restaurant, not so much. Perhaps dinner would be different, but I can’t...
Read moreThe hostess said that it was happy hour but only if seated at the outside bar. When the waitress came I asked for the happy hour menu and she said it's not happy hour. I went back to the hostess and she said oh today is Sunday? We were re-seated outside by the pool. Nice ocean view, nice restaurant & common areas. When we were done we walked over to the other pool which is much nicer and there's a bar there but there was no one at the bar. Our waitress was Marisa. My friend asked for gluten-free items and Marisa said there wasn't any so she almost didn't order anything. My friend figured out she could get the poke bowl but not get the egg roll crisps it's served with. She asked for the nacho chips instead and Marisa said yes but there would be a charge to add those. Then the waitress said that there was gluten-free pizza which meant she also could have suggested getting the pizza bread with the poke bowl instead of what my friend received just a bowl of tuna & a bowl of guacamole. I ordered a Tito's bloody Mary $13 & then a strawberry mojito $14. My bloody Mary was served with nothing in it and I asked her do you have a lime and olives and celery? She said oh I didn't know you want those and she brought them back with a limp half-piece of celery and leaves. Outside they don't serve glass it was in a small plastic cup. My friend ordered a Don Julio margarita jalapeno. She asked if there was an upcharge to change the tequila and Marissa said yes. When we got the bill her Margaritas were $19. She was charged for the tequila and for the jalapeno flavor. If Marissa knew this when talking about the Don Julio upcharge that would have been the time to say to get a flavor it would be more $. Crystal the manager came over and we said we couldn't believe the prices for the small plastic cups and inside we would have had a nice big glass and she said that it was the same amount of liquor. The drinks were half the size but they are the same price. She was very calm & understanding, she took off $6 of my friend's bill. Marisa spilled drinks on two tables guests laps. I don't know if she was nervous or clumsy but it was a big mess. I moved our drinks to the right side of the table and was worried when she came over to us. I ordered the artichoke and spinach dip and it's presentation looked great. When I dipped it was a solid layer of thick cheese on top and barely any dip underneath it. Empty glasses and plates remained on the table. I used the table next to us to...
Read moreNot a good experience. Server 292 because he never gave us his name. Was not attentive, did not seem to care about getting us drinks or anything for that matter. So much so, each time my wife and I wanted some drinks, I just got up from our table inside and went to the bar to see our girl Dee who we know and love. Barely saw server 292 till about halfway through the meal (after he saw me at the bar getting my own drinks as well as when he finally asked if I needed anything, I replied no I’m good I got it myself). Food was good so no issues there. But we got married here 3 years ago on the beach and are locals. We have been coming here for about 5 years since you opened and by far worst meal yet. Again, not the food, strictly the service. Literally passed 50 restaurants to choose to eat here from our house for lunch today. We will second think that next time. Tamron who had just started her shift and she saw I was getting frustrated, came by to ask if we were good or needed anything. Really appreciated her because that was more than any manager if they were working today did. The place was dead and for a weekend at hutch during season. Not good. I do not totally blame server 292, could have been his training or lack of training by management in just wanting to take care of his customers. Spent about $100 for lunch which normally I could care less about and is a lighter bill for us and instead of enjoying lunch, just got irritated almost the entire time. Too many new people working here and again for it to be dead in season on a weekend, should say something to any of the managers who run the driftwood or even Ed who runs the hotel. I’m not even happy about writing this review because I love the hutch and driftwood. Just not a good experience. Hell, I would have waited patiently hours for any food or drinks if the server was personable and fun and just actually gave a damn. We have eaten here so many times and have never had an issue, but today was completely unacceptable and the empty restaurant around in season spoke volumes. Was not sure who the manager was but I believe the man walking around in a white dress shirt definitely knew what was going on and decided to just keep walking by and never address it. Might just go to kyle G’S on the water...
