My wife and I tried Grandma Kitchen today for the first time after I read wonderful reviews and comments on social media. They are on the Fox River, so we came by boat on Sunday morning around 8:15 for breakfast.
Boating to a resturaunt is a fun thing for us to do, but the docks are a very important part of our overall experience. For the boaters out there, the docks are in good condition and the tires are sufficent to protect your boat without deploying fendors. It isn't in a no wake zone, so tie off good as your boat will get bounced around as the river gets busy.
The atmosphere inside was very clean and pleasing to the eye. It is a bit of surprise how nice it is when you consdier it from the outside. But if you go in, you will be pleasantly surprised. They also have picnic tables outside with great views to the river. There were already people there early on a Sunday morning, and some appeared to be regulars at the bar. Pick up orders were going out too, so that increased my confidence in the quality of food.
Not only was the quality very good, but the portions were generous too. I had the pancake combination. It came with three huge pancakes, two eggs, hashbrowns, and meat. It was more than I could eat.
I had one unresolved issue that made me give this 4-stars instead of 5. Of my three very large pancakes, one was charred and tasted burnt. Not one to complain in resturaunts, when Jose checked in our food after we were served, I pointed it out to him. I expected him to offer to remake the burnt one or provide some other compensation (perhaps on the bill). He did not. Given our experience up that point in time, it was surprising and disappointing.
The prices aren't shocking overall, but $4 for a cup of coffee (even if they are delivered in wonderfully pleasing mugs) was steep.
At it's core, Grandma's Kitchen is a mexican resturaunt, but they did traditional American breakfast very well too. I will go back to try other things including their...
Read moreIn a time of greedy corporations, I'm making a point of supporting small business. We were so excited when Grandma's Kitchen opened up. It's within bicycle distance, beats El Puerto hands down in food and service. It also has outdoor seating on the river, although not as extensive as more established places. So far I've had tacos, chili rellanos, nachos, lobster stuffed jalapeños, tampequeña, and shrimp ceviche. Plus, we've eaten breakfast on a few occasions, I'm stuck on their breakfast burrito, it's so good I haven't tried anything else ha. I have been thoroughly pleased with both the food and the service. Great bar, as well! It's an interesting mix, sometimes they're playing top 40, sometimes country, sometimes Mexican music, sometimes dance music.
These guys care, and are delivering a much needed product in the heart of Johnsburg. If you're looking for a party bar and gaming, this isn't for you. But if you're looking for a tasty meal, great people, good drinks, and enjoying it all by the...
Read moreGot the ribeye steak with 6 jumbo shrimp, came with grilled veggies, rice, beans, and garlic bread.
Ribeye steak was 10oz. and I couldn’t finish the full meal. Steak was flavorful and cooked fine.
Shrimp, wouldn’t call it jumbo shrimp but that’s likely just to market it on a menu better in my view. Was a tad overcooked and didn’t have a ton of flavoring.
Grilled veggies were arguably the best part of dish.
Rice to me comparing to other Mexican rices was a 2/5. It had to be camouflaged with the beans which were typical refried beans.
Garlic bread was good as it should be, nothing complicated.
Hoping this place really considers reviews and improves their quality as the location on the water is very appealing and would be nice during summertime sitting outside to eat. Indoors was decorated nicely and very clean.
No offense to the cooks, but highly recommend making an authentic Chimichurri sauce as an option with steaks. If done correctly, it’ll enhance any streak and will bring...
