Visited this place for the first time with my wife because of a review we saw on IG. The restaurant was busy so it took a bit longer to receive our food. When we ordered they didn't have the ox tails so I really wasn't sure what else to order and I knew I was holding up the line because people were piling in. The cashier handled it well without getting upset with me like some other places do when they are busy. I settled for the fried fish and my wife got the salmon. My sides were greens, Mac n cheese, and yams. My wife had coleslaw and fries. Everything tasted great. Except for the mac n cheese. It was just OK. It's was not very cheesy or flavorful. I was surprised at that. I received a cup of jalapeños so I eventually poured that into my mac n cheese and it made it taste so much better. Everything else was delicious. The green were very peppery and spicy and most importantly had no pork. I've never had greens that were so robust. They were very good and the yams were sticky and sweet just the way I like them. The coleslaw was good too. The fried fish and the salmon was seasoned well and tasty. For dessert I had the banana pudding. It wasn't the best put it was enjoyable because I love banana pudding. It was really sweet and it had this interesting flavor that was foreign to my usual banana pudding experiences. There was this hint of citrusy meringue or something. Overall a delicious experience. Read moreVisiting KCMO from California, my SFL had 1930's on our to-go list. This restaurant was one of our best experiences. I am not sure which was more pleasing... the background story of the family traditions with the healing properties in some of the ingredients or the food itself. Free was there and greeted us each time with excellent customer service. The relaxed ambience was quite quaint with good vibes. We ordered the tackle box (2 chicken wings, 3 stripes of fish, 3 shrimps served with a side of fried okra), lemon pepper wings, and oxtails. We chose greens and Mac as our sides (not my favorites). Yes, there was a wait, but anyone who cooks should know that true soul food takes time. Everything was descent. However... although the Basa was divine, delicious. The oxtails were the show stoppers. So tender and seasoned to perfection. I am not a fan of dirty rice but I must say I enjoyed the buttery flavor that dripped into it from the meat. And I almost forgot to mention the banana pudding... it is not typical, it has a distinct and pleasant flavor. It is very refreshing. A nice pallet cleanser and tasty treat. There was even a backdrop for photo taking. (And the bathroom was very clean.) We had such a wonderful time here that we gave Free a new name......
Read moreBeen noticing about this place for a while and I did really wanted to give it a try that I even had it on the want to go list on Google maps the menu that seem like it does have a son variety of comfort food mostly burgers and fried chicken and barbecue that I had their classic smash burger had to wait for a while since it was the one person there and I was probably the only customer when I was there and also they put onions on the burger that I have to scrape them off myself and also that I could not get the condiments since pretty much couldn't get the guy over and I may do without it mostly the burger was really big and beefy and it was a double and had seasoned fries and it seems like the fries were homemade and it was mostly freshly hot and it really isn't much of the place I would have any rush to go back mostly The vibes weren't really to appealing at least it does have some seating anyway and it will be a while before I go back to this place and I'll probably might get something different and I'll ask him to hold the onions on my...
