If you are on a quest for barbecue Taste of Kansas City is the joint you're looking for. This quaint little hole in the wall is full of surprises. There's no parking lot so it's a little deceiving, but you can park on the side of the road. Before I get to the food, I just want y'all to know that's probably the cleanest bathroom I've been in in any restaurant in a long time. The atmosphere is very homecoming, we are greeted with smiles and good conversation. The gentleman who took our order ask us questions as if he were really interested in what we were up to we were heading and where we were from. Had great conversations with other guests, they were traveling through on a motorcycle so this immediately sparked up conversations with other people. Now on to the food, one thing that we agreed upon is that their chicken wings are amazing. There are tons of options for wings out there and I don't have a lot of experience with Kansas City barbecue, but man I couldn't stop eating. The skin of a chicken wings was a no batter fried seasoned skin, to all the tones in my mouth. The meat was tender and full of flavor. The ribs were fantastic, but couple with the sauce by the way which was amazing, made the ribs even better. The sides were also fantastic, especially the beans. I personally find it important that a barbecue restaurant have great beans, and the bar here was set very high. There was a sweet mustard zing that made you want to keep going back for more. And finally to top the meal off were homemade chocolate chip cookies that reminded me of home. Thanks again Taste of Kansas City BBQ for the...
Read moreFlavor: 4.5/5 (would be 5/5 if I wasn't already a KC BBQ native and was surprised by this for the first time) Portion: 5/5 Quality/Texture: 5/5 Customer Service: 5+/5
I came in when they were closed, but doing some catch up work so the door was open and they still served me what they had left in the warmers. I got the burnt ends and beans. Here's my breakdown: Sauce: They make their own sauce which is amazing. It's not overly tomato based and not too light. Just a great blend that doesn't feel heavy and overpower the smoked meat flavor. Meat: Burnt ends were a little dry but that's what they're supposed to be - burnt! The smoky flavor is consistent throughout and not overwhelming. There's a peppery outer coating that is very complimentary but is accelerated/ very well accompanied with the heavily peppered beans. Beans: If you like crushed black pepper corns you're going to LOVE this. The beans have a molasses or brown sugar base mixed with a hint of their sauce and have burned ends mixed in. The black pepper that is not missed in any bite carries a mild spiciness that takes the BBQ to a new level without leaving you reaching for a glass of milk, but rather an iced tea to put a conductor's pause on the symphony of flavors that are harmonized in your mouth once together.
Overall: 5/5 will come back.
PS: I ate the food too fast...
Read moreThis place DOES have fire food. The reason for the low rating however is they don’t honor their own word. We USED TO go here literally 3 times a week most weeks, however, will keep our dollar to ourselves from now on… We went on a Friday to order 7 rib tip specials, arriving at ONE SEVENTEEN in the afternoon, only to be lied to & told we can’t order that many specials & that they were not selling anymore at that price. We asked, so are you out & we were told they were. We literally sent someone else in 10 minutes later & magically they sold them the special no problem & somehow they had the availability. Just to see if this trend was going to continue. We waited until after 3pm THE SAME DAY but placed the order now for FIVE rip tip meals & EUREKA! They somehow had them to sell us at FULL PRICE. Why lie to customers? YOU made the rule that the special ends at THREE PM not depending on how many you order. We love this place & truth be told the owner is very cool & down to earth… but the short stubby dude & the dude who looks like kodak black behind the counter are losing y’all business literally for NOTHING. You’d think business wouldn’t turn down money, but apparently this one does. So we’ll take our...
