The Carriage Crossing I knew and loved from my childhood is DEAD and GONE. I’ve spent years telling my children and grandchildren about the magic of this place, building it up as a treasured piece of my past. Yesterday, I finally had the chance to share it with them, my daughter, two granddaughters, my best friend, and her son. What we experienced was nothing short of HORRIFYING!
It started tolerably enough, but the place was swarming with flies. Nasty, buzzing flies, and we tried to overlook it. Big mistake. Two in our group ordered tea, one sweet, one regular. The “regular” tea tasted and smelled like it had been steeped with a sweat drenched rag. Absolutely revolting.
We tried to hold onto hope with appetizers, fried okra and fried green beans. The okra was flavorless, and while the green beans were decent, that ended the moment I saw a hair. Not a simple stray, it looked like it came from a man’s armpit, beard, or God knows where else.I nearly vomited on the spot.
The main dishes? Disgraceful. The chicken fried steak was a bland, rubbery, obviously frozen disappointment. Mashed potatoes and baked beans tasteless and dry. One meal, a KC Strip was ordered medium but came out rare and somehow crunchy? I still can’t figure out how you mess up beef to that degree.
As for the kids’ meals? Edible, but barely. The chicken strips were overcooked into jerky, and the corn dog wasn’t far behind. The kicker? We sent back nearly full plates, and the waitress didn’t even ask why. That says everything.
Still clinging to a shred of nostalgia, I brought home two cinnamon rolls, once a highlight of my childhood. This morning, I bit into one and was hit with the same revolting taste as that disgusting tea. It tasted like body odor, like someone had been storing them under their arms. Absolutely inedible.
I am disgusted, heartbroken, and honestly appalled by what this place has become. I don’t know what has happened, whether it’s poor management, bad food handling, or a complete lack of standards, but this place is an embarrassment. Given it’s located in Yoder, I’m not even sure what food regulations apply, and frankly, that terrifies me.
We will NEVER return, and I will NEVER recommend Carriage Crossing to anyone again. To the owners: DO BETTER! This was not just a bad meal, it was a violation...
Read moreWe've been wanting to come here ever since passing by on our way to and from the Kansas State Fair earlier this year. We've wanted to come for breakfast as we're fans of big juicy cinnamon buns!! We're new to the Wichita area but have had great experiences eating food made by Mennonite's and Amish back in NY and their baked goods are usually to die for. We just dined for breakfast this last Saturday morning and were blown away by how delicious everything was! The restaurant vibe is nothing incredible-your basic family restaurant establishment, run of the mill type eatery. You walk in right between the store and register. And there's a little pie case with delicious looking pies and cinnamon rolls to purchase. There's a store to the right with restrooms where you can shop some local made goods, the candles smell wonderful, and some of the local made art and decor is really cute. We ordered tons of food to try for our party of 5, 3 of those being our kids. The coffee cake, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, bacon and sausage were so yummy!! The breakfast potatoes were the best I've ever had!! Everything was super delicious we ended up taking 4 to go plates home for later as our eyes were bigger than our tummies!! It was reasonably priced for everything we had and well worth it for how yummy it was. Upon getting ready to leave I told my husband I wanted to try a pie. I don't feel like making any pies for Thanksgiving this year-as we are hosting at our house with tons of family flying in from all over the US, and if they're delish-we'd get some more pies the day before Thanksgiving for our family feast. We opted on a peanut butter/chocolate pie. We get home and later that afternoon I'm all about trying the pie. I cut a slice and it's super delicious! Get more than halfway through and go to work another bite and there's a huge strand of reddish-brown hair entangled within the pie crust and the filling. 😩😳 I about lost my stomach and had to immediately stop and toss the pie. This couldn't be my hair or my daughter's hair as we both have super thick black curly/wavy hair. Hence the 3 stars. This place was amazing... but I don't do hair in anything-not even mine. We'll opt to buy a few store bought packaged pies instead. I can't say we won't return, especially when family's in town, but...
Read moreWe've been going to Carriage Crossing for years and have always found the place outstanding and making a trip from Andover just to eat says something about the place until now. First we were sat at a table under the air conditioning unit and it was freezing. We asked the waitress if there was another table we could move to. She told us there wasn't even though we could see several empty tables. So I say there freezing throughout our time. We placed our order and when she brought out our appetizer which was fried green beans she didn't bring us anything ranch or anything to dip them down n so we had to ask. By the time she brought some we we halfway done eating them. By the way the fried green beans were the best part of the meal. When we got our order it didn't look very appetizing. He ordered the fried chicken with two sides and I ordered the chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy and corn. His chicken looked old and over cooked. He went ahead and ate but wasn't pleased with it. My chicken fried chicken was small and tasted old and rubbery with some bites couldn't even chew. The mashed potatoes were cold and runny. The corn came from a can. The waitress did check on us a couple of times but we didn't complain. We weren't even halfway done eating when the waitress came by asking if we wanted to see the pie menu. When we said no she gave us our ticket. It was like she was trying to rush us out. Don't know if we'll be making this trip again anytime soon. Oh, one more thing, the bread didn't seem as good but the butter...
