The Landing Store — Restaurant in Kennebunk

Meh. Lapin and I came here for their famous "huge lobster roll" from a suggestion of a local travel agent who said "locals love this place". The deli was located in the middle of nowhere and we would have almost missed if it not for the sign. Upon arrival, the store was empty except for the three employees (they were not very friendly and the cashier kept playing with his phone) who worked there. We got the large lobster roll ($32.39 including tax), which was filled with lobster meat. However, the bread was dry and the lobster roll was just meat with no flavoring, salt, black pepper, mayo or even butter. It was plain, dry and disappointing. The large is good for two people which was around 8 inches along. The store has a couple of tables outside for you to eat along with 6 or so...

My sister goes here every weekend on her way to the beach, she’s been satisfied with her usual. The other day she took me to try it, I ordered a catamaran. While she held it she said it felt very light compared to others she got. When lunch time came I opened it to find one piece of turkey, tons of spread cheese and chunks of tomato and a little lettuce!! The bread was dry and the ends had nothing!! I went back the next day and told the guy at the register that I have the WORST sandwich yesterday, he asked me what I ordered, I told him, then what was in it, I said turkey, then he said I never had one of those!!!! I lived in Kennebunk on the Sea Rd from 1981-82, I was 8-9 years old. I can vividly remember going to the landing store to grab last minute items. Every now and then my mother would buy me a Whoopie pie… they were amazing!! Even after we moved to Biddeford we’d make a special trip just for the whoopie pies.

Fast forwards few years… I joined the military and moved them moved back to the area in ‘01. I had heard that the Landing store had some ups and downs but I’ll be dammed if the whoopie pies are exactly as I remember them.
