Great place to fuel up your vehicle and pick up some delicious snacks and pastries. I needed a bag of ice and told there was a self standing ice machine outside. I walked to it and it was like a giant vending machine where you select the size of bag you want and pay with a credit card. The bag that you get is not tied so if needed it tied then bring your own ties with you. You can also fill up a big jug of water too.

Hruska's has always been my rest stop for filling up my car with gas, picking up lunch, buying presents for kids, and restroom breaks when I travel to and from Austin to Houston. I have seen many changes here though the years like cosmetic upgrades and Hruska's branded products, but the centerpiece has not changed with excellent kolaches, pigs-in-the-blankets, burgers, cookies and cinnamon rolls. This place is very country-like where used to see chickens roam outside. I do miss them. The staff is extremely nice and helpful.
I purchased two pigs-in-the-blankets (Ham & Cheese & Sausage). The ham one tasted like spam where both had great flavor with soft warm bread wrapping it. They do serve the best.
The only drawback I have is the restrooms are not monitored all day like their competition where they have a dedicated person to make sure the restrooms are clean and stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, and soap. They have degraded and quite dirty and perhaps need to be a bit larger. It is also weird seeing store products on display as you enter, but I did see a shirt I liked, and purchased it.
Overall, you will not be disappointed with the food and bakery items here being a...
Read moreYesterday, my family and I had the pleasure of experiencing the Hill Country kolache at Hruska's Store & Bakery in Ellinger, Tx. As avid fans of the restaurant's kolaches, we were eager to try their latest offerings and to savor the great atmosphere and service that Hruska's is known for.
We arrived at Hruska's just as the lunch rush was beginning, but we were quickly seated. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but the staff remained calm and efficient. We ordered a variety of kolaches, including the sausage and cheese and fruit kolaches to share.
Our kolaches arrived fresh from the oven and were still warm to the touch. The dough was light and fluffy, and the fillings were generous and flavorful. The sausage and cheese kolache was a classic, with a perfectly seasoned sausage filling and a generous amount of melted cheese. The poppy seed kolache was sweet and nutty, and the fruit kolache was bursting with fresh berries.
After lunch, we took some time to browse the bakery section of Hruska's. We were amazed by the wide variety of pastries and baked goods that were available. We purchased a few items to take home, including a loaf of Czech bread and a dozen cookies.
Overall, we had an excellent experience at Hruska's Store & Bakery. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was outstanding. We highly recommend Hruska's to anyone looking for a truly authentic Hill Country...
Read moreIf you haven't had kolaches, my goodness, I feel so bad! Now, if you need gluten free, I'm not sure what the options are, but if you like soft, sweet yeasty doughed bread filled with sausage or fruit and cream cheese, you will adore this place. The special for the season at present is the pumpkin kolache. I also got a sausage, jalapeño and cheese kolache. It had ample spice - not for wimps.
Ask them to heat your kolache. It is softer that way. The texture is very different when heated - and better!
By the kolaches, they have a rack for discounted kolaches. For example, I got 8 I think for $7.75. I also saw all types of cookies, such as red velvet, Ranger, and others, and they had banana bread. I took the extra kolaches to family because Texans do tend to love kolaches but few places have this Polish dough recipe.
This location also has tons of shopping with stuffed animals and neat and even scientific toys for children and what appears to be some year-round Christmas inventory. So many things for shopping junkies, such as fold up baseball caps, and unusual purses, even home decor items and candles.
And they have bathrooms with multiple stalls for men and women.
I expected to spend three minutes here and...
