Big Poppa's BBQ — Restaurant in Lamar

Tonight I stopped in at their new location in Russellville, in the location formerly known as Old Post Barbecue. I actually hadn't heard that Old Post had closed, and pulled up to the window without noticing. I soon learned that they're now Big Poppa's out of Lamar and decided to go ahead and try it out...

While chatting with the lady at the window I asked if they ever check out their competition; at which point she leaned out the window a little so as not to be heard from inside and confided that she hated barbecue. I probably should have taken that as a sure sign that I shouldn't order.

Well, I ordered anyways. For $24 I got a pound of the Brisket and a large Okra to take home and fix our own plates. Fifteen minutes later we're sitting down to dinner. I was excited to try it out, but two bites into my brisket I was done. I gave my plate to the dog. It's absolutely inedible.

It's got a very deep umami, like it was doused in fish oil or left on the warmer for a few days. It's not barbecue at all, it's absolutely disgusting.

No smoke flavor. No beef flavor. Nothing discernable but fish.

They have no fish on the menu, so this can't be cross-contamination from preparing fish and brisket with the same cutlery or cutting board.

If you're hungry for barbecue, you'd do a lot better starving yourself than stopping here. Worst "barbecue" ever.

The okra wasn't nice, either. It was very oily and soggy, had bits of stem in it, and also had a hint of the fishiness to it.

My $24 worth of brisket and okra will be put out in the yard tonight to feed the wildlife, and we will certainly never...

These guys are amazing!!!! We’ve been in AR over a week and this is by far our favorite place we’ve eaten! The guy that took our order was super friendly and helpful. I had just a plain pulled pork sandwich and my boyfriend the “the big nasty”. Pork was moist, delicious and they have a really good bbq sauce like none I’ve tasted. I stopped here with my wife and youngest son for something different and was very satisfied!! I got the Big Nasty, my wife got the brisket sandwich with two sides, and my son got the loaded nachos which were all very good!! The big nasty was piled high with a yummy combination of pulled pork and slaw all covered with beans and BBQ sauce, two words... Freaking Awesome!!!
