Millstone Bakery features a quaint storefront tucked into the historic downtown LaSalle. The inside is warm and cozy, with an inviting atmosphere. Upon placing my order, I felt compelled to sit down and watch the Master Bakers at work from the nearby kitchen window. The smells of fresh bread and ground coffee intermingle with the sounds of prep in the kitchen and near constant stream of guests entering the bakery as my cream puff and coffee arrive at my table. The daily cream puff is a seasonal flavor: Harvest Spice. Sliced in half, a perfectly golden, flaky pastry sits on the plate, piped high with fresh whipped cream, drizzled with a caramel sauce, and then topped with the other half of the golden pastry. The cream puff towers on the plate, too beautiful and intimidating to eat. Unsure of how best to proceed with the act of eating this puff, I forgo any all grace or manners and simply pick it out of the wrapper, open as wide as I can, and take a bite. The cream, the caramel, and to my surprise, a gooey flavorful filling nestled in the bottom half of the puff burst in my mouth. The cream is so sweet, soft, and light. The gooey filling appears to contains the advertised Harvest Spice flavor, and is so delightful I wish I had an opportunity to try it alone! The caramel sauce added a warm balance to the entire experience, tying together the cream and the Harvest Spice for a full autumnal flavor experience. Daily danishes, specialty breads, and cream puff flavors are posted to the bakery's Facebook page. Be sure to follow for updates! They offer baked goods and flavors I have driven hours to possibly have a chance of tasting, so stop by Millstone Bakery in LaSalle, IL and try something different! Read moreHad my first opportunity to stop in and try Millstone Bakery this morning and I must say the buzz around this bakery is well deserved.
Greeted with smiling faces, the smell of fresh ground Starved Rock coffee, and pastry and bread baking was a perfect way to start the morning.
I got there about 45 mins after opening and was lucky enough to get a fresh sourdough loaf, a strawberry cream puff, two triple chocolate cookies, sticky toffee pastries, a day old olive sourdough loaf, and two iced caramel macchiatos.
The cream puff was amazing. The pastry remained fresh and crisp and the filling was light and vibrant.
The triple chocolate cookies delivered on the decadence you would expect from triple chocolate.
The sticky toffee pastries were everything you could ask for, perfectly executed and flavorful pastry with a wonderful toffee glaze. The flavor of the toffee was a delight as it was less heavy than traditional toffee.
The olive sourdough was pillowy sourdough punctuated with the bright briny flavor from what I assume are Kalamata or nicoise olives.
The staff was so helpful and nice. You can tell they are truly enjoying what they are doing. This is a true gem and asset for our area, make sure to give...
Read moreFinally had time to try the Italian bread and sourdough. I had others rave about the bread. They were correct..its wonderful, much better than the processed breads in the stores or the frozen dough breads that are baked in the big box stores. Exceeded my expectations. Staff was very nice and helpful. My first visit was extremely pleasant. Those who think it's expensive, it's quality ingredients and competitive to similar quality items. I've paid more or the same for inferior products outside the Illinois Valley. These items are high quality, reasonably priced for what...
