EDIT: I went back and spoke to an employee I know. He confirmed that the restaurant changed hands less than 4 weeks ago (early May 2019). All wait- and cook-staff are the same as before, just the cashier/hostess/phone-tender is different... I was the victim of new management. Won't do take-out again, but will certainly dine-in.

Used to love this place and ate there at least monthly. However, my most recent experience will make me think twice: At 8:40PM, I ordered (by phone, for pickup) our favorites: fried fish filet w/ black bean sauce, chef's delight shrimp and scallop, and sa-chien soup for two. Was told standard 15-20min wait time. Arrived 15 later, was told to wait. No problem. 5 mins later (9PM), was asked whether I ordered rockfish. No, fried fish filet. 10mins later, I was told it was going to be another 10 mins. The reason? They still had to make the fried fish filet! At this point I didn't trust their estimate and since my hungry kids were waiting in the car outside, I realized I could eat sooner at home than by waiting until nearly 9:30PM to eat there so I bailed. They made no attempt to make things right, just said they were busy with other customers, sorry for the delay! Has this place been sold to new management? The same waiters are still there but the cashier I've never seen...

OK, so we tried them again.

I don't know what changed, but the offerings we have tried have been wonderful! We still won't take a chance on the chicken stuff, but the beef, duck, etc., are all super. It deserves re-evaluation.

Ironically, one of their neighbors, also Asian, won't get food there. I'm not sure why.

Since we posted our negative reviews while back, we decided to try takeout again.

See the below. They continue to use frozen chicken tenders ... breaded believe it or not! The only difference is that they are sliced into smaller bits.

Of course, the frozen breaded tenders were previously cooked before freezing. Putting these breaded "delights" into a sauced dish results in a disgusting concoction.

So ... we promise to keep our promise and never go back. Cheating on the protein ingredients is reprehensible, no matter the excuse.

Previous review:

Since they changed hands, the food has become just awful. We tried three times to be sure and each meal was worse than the previous. For example, order a chicken dish and get frozen commercial tenders and bottled sauce. We will not be going back. We went for over 20 years but...

I went on a Thursday where early dinner time was pretty empty. But I could tell from the won ton soup it was gonna be good. They even have sui Mai. The won ton soup was flavorful and they don’t skimp out on scallions either. The meat inside tasted like a soup dumpling to me and the noodles were soft. Each of those small cups were $2 so I recommend getting multiple. Their fried rice was nice as it had the egg and carrots and peas, all the good things. Wasn’t hard but I wouldn’t say it was fluffy either. Pan fried dumplings were crispy and good! Their dumpling sauce was also really good and made in-house! I wish that store brand sauce could be as good. Lo mien was good, noodles kinda tasted like San Antonio, TX’s version but without the grease and oil. Not sure if it was the dumpling sauce but there was a quick slight aftertaste. It was different than the noodles themselves but it didn’t make it unbearable. Service was great! I was the only one in there at that time but I think they balanced the right amount of checking up and the waiter was really polite, making the whole experience memorable!

We moved away from this area over two years ago, and not being near this restaurant is one of our few regrets. We enjoyed countless meals here for 36 years. So when we had to attend an event near Towson, we stopped here for lunch. Still fantastic food and our favorite waiter Carlos was still there. He said he has been there for 31 years. That alone speaks volumes. My wife had Morongo delight, and I had hot crispy beef, which is best when dining in. Great as usual. I've referred dozens of friends and co-workers to the Mandarin house over the past 3 decades and all agreed it's some of the best Chinese food they have ever had.
