We moved to this area about 12 years ago and not long after came across the Home Plate restaurant. We ate there one afternoon and the food was particularly not very good so we vowed to never go back. 12 years later, after passing the place by millions of times knowing it wasn't worth stopping there, we decided to go there one day for breakfast because it was convenient on our way out of town. Not expecting anything good - we were surprised and impressed with our meal and service and vowed that we would try it again soon. We've been there many times in the past 5 months and every time we've left very happy and sure we would be back soon. The chili and soup are always excellent no matter what kind. They have delicious daily specials. Everything is always fresh and very good, including the service - so friendly and attentive! If it's lunch time, my husband usually orders a burger with fries which he likes a lot and he's very picky. Today we stopped at The Lions Tap for burgers. After a few bites he said the burgers & fries were BETTER AT HOME PLATE - I was shocked because he's always really liked Lions Tap burgers and always said the burgers there are better than Matt's Bar in Minneapolis which is where I think they're the best. I haven't had a burger at Home Plate yet but I must agree, the fries are better at Home Plate. In fact, the fries are better at Home Plate than most other places oddly enough. Not sure how they pull that off. I am now planning to order a burger at Home Plate and compare it with Lions Tap and Matt's myself. I will update my review after this event shortly. Breakfast is always very good. You can tell the food is definitely "home made" quality and not from pre-made frozen. The ambiance is old timey comfortable, which I like. It's more like 5 and dime, not upscale but I like it nonetheless. We appreciate having this great restaurant so close to home where there aren't a...
Read moreI work near this restaurant, and I came here the other day with a co-worker to grab a milk shake on my 30 minute break. Now there is only one person in front of me in line, also waiting to get their milk shake. For the person in front of us to get their shake, my co-worker and I to get our shakes, it takes them TWENTY minutes to make it. TWENTY minutes for them to make 3 shakes. Not only this, but before I asked for my shake, I asked for a flurry. They responded by saying that they don’t even know how to make it. That’s fine I guess, I settle with a chocolate shake no problem. So after waiting 20 minutes for them to make these shakes we go over to the register. Now keep in mind that these shakes were ok at best, and I finished my shake before my co-worker even got his. As we go up to the register, they charge us $12 for this two medium sized, normal shakes. That is insane even if they were decently sized and/or decent tasting shakes. I would NOT recommend coming here if you are looking for something on the go, or ice cream in general. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 is because there was nothing wrong with the shakes, and the service wasn’t as horrendous as the price. Bottom line, only come here if you have money to spend, and...
Read moreClassic small town diner with outstanding food and service. I do sales so I'm on the road often and dine out multiple times daily. Let me tell you, places as good as this gem are to far and few. The food is like your grandmother's kitchen, served piping hot and with plenty of fixings. If that weren't enough every time I've been here the waitress has made me feel like a welcome gust in her own home. Every time I'm in the area I make it a point dine here and I have yet to be disappointed in any way! The prices are very reasonable, much cheaper than those large chain places where your food is microwaved. None of that here, all the food tastes very...
