Our family lives within a few miles and we've been fans/patrons of B&B for years. Love supporting small, local restaurants. My family visited for dinner last night and I feel compelled to provide a review. I hope the feedback is considered constructive. There are enough little gripes that, considered altogether, have us concluding that we won't be visiting again for a while.
Gold Star - the food is fantastic! The chicken tenders and fish and chips are a breath of fresh air as they aren't the "out of a box" variety. I can't remember an entree or app that wasn't really good and it's been this way for years. So happy with what you do and we really do crave your offerings often.
Service - the people are great and you try hard to serve. It was busy last night and we had our young daughter with us. The woman working the front desk worked hard to get us a low top table - great service. The server and the training server did a nice job. A manager came around and asked how the food was. I considered bringing up this collective of issues with her at that time but I honestly didn't want to spend the time in that setting and I wanted to be thoughtful outside of the moment to be fair. You really do seem to care about your customers and it's noticed.
Gripe #1 - Nickel and Dime You. If I order fish and chips and pay $16 for them, I expect to be provided enough condiments to enjoy the meal. A small cup of sauce is provided but each additional is $0.75. Enough tartar sauce for fish? = $0.75. Want ranch for fries? = $0.75. For a family to eat, suddenly we're paying an extra $7.50 because we want enough tartar sauce and chipotle ranch for fries. I know other places do this as well and it's not a huge thing, but it's a nagging thing that adds up.
Gripe #2 - Carry Out Service. The last 2 times we've gotten carry out, those expensive extra sauces that I paid for weren't included. Each time we call afterward and mention this, we're told the online ordering system doesn't display something right, etc. Despite being told the money will be refunded, the problem is the experience of the meal is hurt because the quantity of sauce provided is inadequate. Who wants to finish two fish strips with no tartar sauce?
Gripe #3 - Atmosphere is Too Loud - it's astounding how loud it gets inside. Lots of windows and hard surfaces add up to an echo chamber of noise. The background noise is so high that patrons then raise their voices just to talk and it escalates. We were dining last night around 5:30 and we had so much trouble talking as a family. If I didn't lean down within a foot of my daughter, I couldn't hear her at all. To make matters worse, you cranked the music halfway through the meal. I don't understand this - it isn't "bar time" yet, it's meal time, right? When I'm at Arrowhead, my Apple Watch alerts me when it gets dangerously loud at 90db. I had to check while we were sitting there - 83db. When I checked the logged data during our visit, it shows the minimum sound level was 72db and peak above 90db several times. I understand other establishments might get equally as loud during social after-hours time but that isn't a place we go to have a family meal. We won't be returning for in-person dining unless it's pleasant out and we can sit outside.
You have food that we want to enjoy and you're a business we wish to support but the many small gripes are adding up to us needing to make other choices for our meals. I hope you might consider these topics and perhaps make a few adjustments to make improvements going forward. Thanks...
Read moreBurgers had flavor and bun was good. If you want something filling you have to order double patty. Both my boys destroyed their and were still hungery which usually is not the case. Patty's were very thin, and not reasonable for the price. Fish and chips were good. Tarter sauce had slight vinegar taste but not overbearing. Paid extra for some Cajun seasoning to be sprinkled ontop of the fries and was not worth the extra $1.50 I paid for a few sprinkles of salt less flavor. You couldn't even tell anything was added and I had to reseason them when we got home. Lastly, we ordered curbside pick up. They charged over $1.99 convenience fee to even place my order (absolute rip off) AND $1.50 for curbside pick up. I pulled up at my exact time and waited for over 13mins before I had to park the car and go inside only to wait another 4 minutes for anyone to greet me. Now keep in mind there were maybe 7 people total there between the bar and dining area. There were 2 people behind the bar, I could see my to go orders just sitting there getting colder and it took them 4 minutes to walk over and ask how I could be helped with no warm greeting or welcome feeling. Just, can I help you as if I had wondered into the wrong place. I had already tipped $7 on a $60 order expecting to not have to put on a mask and get out of my car in 30 degree weather. So I paid $6 extra dollars to do it all myself PLUS and INCONVENIENCE fee. SPENT $9.50 FOR NOTHING! As I left the same car that was sitting waiting for their curbside order was still waiting and probably realized too the curbside scam! I wonder if their tasteless french fries were as cold as ours when they got home. Guess thats why they...
Read moreMy husband and I just enjoyed a delicious lunch at Burg & Barrel in Leawood! We want to send a HUGE thank-you to our server, Hannah S, who was AWESOME! She met us at the door, and when she noticed that I was in a surgical shoe and using a walker, offered us our choice of any open seats in the restaurant. She was friendly and engaging and once we were settled was back immediately to take our drink and appetizer orders. She checked on us multiple times during to meal to ensure we had everything we need and were enjoying our lunches. We were celebrating my husband's birthday, and she made the day that much more special. Thank you, Hannah!
Our food was superb; I had the chicken Caprese sandwich, perfectly cooked and extremely tasty, and my husband had the Smokehouse burger, which he said was quite delicious with very fresh flavors. My sweet potato fries were excellent, as were his regular fries, and the fried pickle spears were hearty without being greasy. (One thing to be prepared for is the cost of the items on the menu, which is consistent with the surrounding neighborhood but may seem a bit pricey for those from other areas in the metro.)
The restaurant itself is airy and open with plenty of windows to let in the light. I was somewhat disappointed in the bathroom, as it was not handicap-accessible, and a bit of a challenge to navigate. Simple additions (e.g., ADA push buttons for the door, placing the towel dispenser near the sink and without a trash can underneath to impede wheelchair access) would be most welcome.
Overall, we had a very nice meal at the Burg & Barrel and appreciate Hannah's service in providing such a lovely way to celebrate a...
