The regular staff here are great, and for decades, this has been my go-to ice cream place. In fact, it’s the only place I eat ice cream anymore because I’m lactose intolerant—but the ice cream here was so good that I didn’t care. Whenever I’m back in Torrington to see family, I stop—sometimes twice a day. But now it feels like they’re slipping. Prices have gone up and no portions have gotten smaller. You can no longer get two different flavors in a “one-scoop” size. I’ve been eating their toasted almond for 20 years, and last time, it was just plain almond flavor. Then, I drove 10 hours R/T from Maine specifically in early July to get a specific sorbet flavor that is so tasty it makes me forget all about dairy. I usually get a larger quantity at this time of year(the only time of year they have it) and buy dry ice to pack it back with me so I can dish it out slowly. This year, I was told that the largest size they’ll pack sorbet in is quart ($15). I asked if I could place a special order for two half gallons ($20 ea) for the next time they were pouring. Turns out, they aren’t pouring any more this year. And besides, even if they did that, there would be a surcharge—no matter what, a gallon of this sorbet would cost me $60! SIXTY DOLLARS!! No exceptions. No discount for buying 4 quarts. $60 for a gallon of ice cream. That’s insane. Very disappointed that y seem more concerned with making money hand over fist on NYers with NY money rather than rewarding a literal...
Read moreNow this is the way ice cream is supposed to be! How in the world did a local competitor get a higher rating and the moniker "best in CT"?
We drove 1.5 hours this past Saturday to find the "best ice cream," but we stopped for lunch first at a local eatery. The waitress told us all the locals go to Peaches N Cream, not the highly touted nearby competitor. OK, so we took her word for it and visited.
Wow. Great friendly staff who was more than willing to explain ingredients and make recommendations. Normal tasting is not allowed, but they will add a dollop of something for you to try on your existing serving. Great work-around. There is a large selection of flavors, perhaps 20 or more, and we found the ice cream to be very smooth and creamy. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the to-go size is quite large at half-gallon with no other options. That's a good size for the distance we traveled, but takes up a lot of room in the freezer with just 2 flavor choices.
Immediately after visiting P&C, we visited the local competitor for comparison. It's not even close. P&C is much better in every regard.
Bottom line is this place is great. Compared to a local and famous competitor, their staff is friendlier and more helpful, they have many more flavor choices, the prices are lower, and the ice cream is smoother and creamier. Go where the locals go and visit Peaches N Cream. You'll...
Read moreBeen coming here for years. Don’t know if the owner recently changed but they got cheap & annoying. Was looking at all the flavors and couldn’t decide, asked for a sample and was informed somewhat abruptly only one sample per customer. Kind of a weird policy, especially if it leads to someone only ordering a single scoop of something instead of two flavors. I understand if someone’s asking for 3-4 samples and holding up the line, but okay fine whatever. Then I go to order and am told they can no longer do two flavors in a single scoop. Their single scoop used to be the equivalent of two scoops and was a lot of ice cream. You’ve ALWAYS been able to split the flavors here. Because two full scoops is just too much. However I think it’s because their scoop sizes seem a lot smaller, the double is the size of what the single used to be, but for the same price. I see a catering vehicle outside, guess they have to pay for it somehow. I don’t see the point in changing all these policies to save a couple teaspoons of ice cream at the cost of potentially alienating customers. It was honestly an off-putting experience and it seems like they’ve changed from being about the community & ice cream to a corporate vibe just trying to make a profit. Ice cream is still good quality, but with this attitude maybe I’ll just take the drive to Arethusa...
