Romantic Weekend Getaway on Lopez Island

We had high expectations based on the reviews, but after dining there I think the review is due to limited choice of restaurants on the island as they are the only one open 7 days a week. Good: Service was good and friendly and the restaurant has a nice view of the open field. Bad: The fish of the day was halibut in curry sauce with rice. The fish was small and dry and all the flavoring is from the curry sauce. The biggest problem is the rice which is not cooked properly- they were dry yet lumped together without any flavor. When we got the check we were surprised it was $46! We could have gotten a way better halibut dish in Seattle with that price. Chowder - mostly potato and again no flavor. Fried oyster- okay but not great It’s a cute local restaurant however the food is such a let down and we had minor stomach cramp afterward. There is also a 3% surcharge for using credit card. In addition the pre-set tip % was higher than normal restaurants. All three options are in the 20% range which is very unpleasant. We really would like to support local restaurants however we will not return.

Back in September, my (now) husband and I went on our honeymoon to the San Juan Islands and happened to be staying on Lopez in a cottage AirBnB just a five minute walk from this place. A lovely Lopez Island Museum employee/volunteer recommended the spot and we decided to follow through and check it out. We were both SO glad we did. He had a burger and fries and I had salmon with squash, zucchini, and rice. It was some of the best salmon I’d had in my entire life. Cooked to perfection. The vegetables were also done flawlessly; I rarely save the vegetables for last (I eat least favorite to favorite), but it was competing pretty close with the salmon. His burger was also amazing and the fries? No notes. Their wine, cider, and beer choices were top tier, too. They also comp-ed our dessert because it was our honeymoon (which was beyond sweet of them) and the overall service was impeccable. Sunny really lives up to their name. A big ray of sunshine. EAT HERE. You’ll be 200% satisfied.

Jen and her crew provided a fantastic catering and bar service for our wedding. There were multiple things that made our wedding dinner stand out. The food was flavorful and visually spectacular, Blue Heron staff were energetic, helpful and kind, and the bar service was outstanding.

Blue Heron Catering made both a seafood and mixed meat paella. Both of which were extraordinary. The flavor was amazing and all the ingredients were fresh and selected the week of the wedding. The paella had the perfect balance of Spanish flavors and zest. The seafood and meat was plentiful. Additionally, they had really delicious appetizers, including croquettes, which were handmade. Multiple guests complimented the apps and the meal. For salads we enjoyed heirloom tomatoes from a local farm with burrata. The crew was also able to put together snacks for kids that were served during the cocktail hour.

The paella was cooked on site and was a feast for the eyes. From preparing the rice and spices to incorporating the fish and meats, we got to witness and smell it all. With a lot of foodie friends, we got lots of compliments. They were able to set everything up on site on the day of the wedding. And they were very accommodating to the private property we hosted our event at, which had several logistical obstacles. We learned later that due to some ferry cancellations they actually chartered a boat for their team to Orcas Island to make sure everything went exactly on time.

The bar service was A+++ and each drink was handmade to order. We enjoyed palmos, old fashions, sangria and plenty of wine and beers. On the morning of the wedding, Jen asked if we needed anything last minute and she was able to kindly pick up some cold brew coffees, and creamers to go along with our wedding cake.

They were very professional. Their food was delicious and their entire team was very kind and had a great attitude. We cannot recommend...

If you order the Crab Melt ask for the crab on the side. This way you'll be able to taste the crab.

The space is beautiful but it seems to be designed without the involvement of kitchen professionals. Without giving away any billable hours, as a accredited kitchen professional, i would recommend visiting this establishment. It seems to have been opened by people who thought it, "might be fun to open a restaurant," but got in way over their heads.

Having worked for a group who, "thought it would be fun to open a restaurant where they could write off dining with friends as R&D," i recognize the reaction to any feedback will be met with projection; "you should have communicated any problems." Not without billing. This isn't free Guacamole.

Also, they have a small bar with great drinks and four taps but don't come by just for cocktails...i was delicately cocktail-shamed by a server for only having drinks.

3/5 stars with hope for their future.

Post Script - If anything you've experienced at this establishment is less than adequate it will be your fault for not saying so. It's their MO from previous businesses in other locations, ... allegedly. Free consultant work and...

My wife and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary at The Blue Heron Bistro on Lopez Island yesterday, and it was an absolutely unforgettable evening. From the moment we walked in, the warm and attentive service made us feel like honored guests—our server was friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect without being intrusive.

We started by sharing the creamy clam chowder, which was rich and flavorful with fresh ingredients, and the crab cakes, perfectly crispy on the outside with tender, sweet crab inside. For mains, my wife opted for the chicken Marsala, which she raved about for its tender chicken and deeply savory mushroom sauce, while I indulged in the special of the day: fresh halibut with a delightful curry sauce that balanced subtle spices with the fish's natural freshness—it was out-of-this-world delicious!

The entire experience was so enjoyable and memorable, turning our special milestone into something truly magical. Thank you to the team at The Blue Heron Bistro for making our anniversary dinner one we'll cherish forever. We can't wait to return and highly recommend this gem to anyone...
