Lone Star Charlie's Family Restaurant — Restaurant in Lufkin

My wife has family and roots in Lufkin Texas. We were there for a wedding, staying in one of the local hotels. One morning we decided to meet for breakfast at a Restaurant. I won't name it, but it has Crackers and Barrels. Man, did we have a bad experience, with orders being wrong/incomplete, and it taking 90 minutes for 5 adults and 3 children to get food and eat. While waiting for food, everyone from Lufkin (I'm not) bemoaned "Why didn't we go to Charlie's??". Disappointment all around.

The next day for breakfast, we take our family to Charlies. Served quickly. Food was delicious and didn't have a bunch of extras that I didn't want. We loved it, my kids loved it, and the price was great. Literally I don't want to get breakfast in Lufkin anywhere else. And I'm sure Lunch/Dinner is just as good.

Little did I realize that not only is Charlie's an institution in Lufkin (seriously, why go anywhere else?) but deeply associated with my wife's childhood. She told me her earliest memories were going to Charlie's (old location) with her family for meals over 30 years ago. For someone like me, that's even more a reason to go.

So if you're traveling to or through Lufkin, you're doing yourself a disservice to not visit Charlie's. Stop there for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Have a good meal, and make the rest of...

Came through Lufkin today traveling through and wanted a really good home cooked breakfast, so my family picked this restaurant. Overall, I will give it a 3/5 stars. The restaurant itself has a very warm homey feel to it. It's self seating which was great. The food was also great! I truly enjoyed every bite I ate. The only downside to my experience here was that my husband ordered blueberry pancakes and was given regular. When the server brought them to the table I reminded her kindly that they were supposed to be blueberry. She took the pancakes and came back two seconds later with a handful of fresh blueberries put on top of the regular pancakes..... That's not blueberry pancakes. I also asked for hash browns with cheese and I received just hash browns, no cheese. However, again the food itself tasted great. The server also was really distracted at the beginning of our meal. She was conversing with a regular customer of hers and we were left waiting for awhile so they could arrange a drop off and exchange address at the table next to where we were sat. My wife and I visited for breakfast. We've visited dozens of diner-style restaurants, and Lone Star Charlies in Lufkin ranks just average. The most outstanding aspect of the visit was the service (which I rate 5 stars +), and all of the staff we encountered were friendly. The food was less than average as the value is weak (small portions for prices paid), and eggs were ordered over-medium and came out runny. No real butter is available (only unhealthy "spread" that is made with hydrogenated vegetable oils and other toxins is provided by default, and tastes terrible also). Butter was requested, but only margarine was brought to the table. There were a few flies, and several mosquitos, flying around us at our table. There is only one bathroom for men and one bathroom for women, so expect to wait a while if the restaurant is even slightly busy. On this day, there was also an easy-up tent setup just outside he entrance with a charity group soliciting customers to buy raffle tickets or donate money. There is much room to improve here if the ownership decided to invest their time, energy, and caring to do so. ...
