UMAMI - Asian Fusion — Restaurant in Manchester

We wanted to give this place a shot since the dine-in reviews seemed better than takeout, but unfortunately this place will be a one and done for my partner and I. The portions here are small and small portions of quality food can be ok but the food also tasted reheated, like everything had been frozen and just warmed up to order. One of us ordered a "wok" meal which wasn't even all cooked in a wok since it included bland, boiled broccoli on the plate. This $21 meal didn't include rice and we were upsold a side of fried rice, which we later found out was priced at an astounding $11. If the dine-in food was this rough I can't imagine what the takeout experience would be.

On the positive side, the inside of the restaurant is really nicely decorated, but you have to put up with yelling and frustration from the open kitchen which is offputting in a place that's trying to present...

Wow, what a wonderful restaurant! We had one of the best Asian dinners, creative, beautifully presented, and delicious. Umami is far above your typical Chinese restaurant, though they do have many of the standard dishes you'd expect. The new decor is low key and comfortable, but it's the creative fusion dishes make this place special, the Herbed Seared Lemon Wild Salmon appetizer, Kimchi Ramen, and Slow Cooked Duck Breast were amazing with fresh ingredients and nuanced seasoning and flavors. Even something as standard as Pork Lo Mein was notches above the usual. Service was attentive, friendly, and informative about the food, and about the very creative cocktails. The Clarified Neapolitan Negroni was delicious!

Umami is a great addition to the excellent restaurant scene...

Umami - Japanese...Delicious savory taste. Not from my experience. Umami - Manchester...Sweet and gloopy. Their $11 spring roll is a singular, poor, small and tasteless rendition. Promoted as including shitake mushrooms, scallions, cabbage and vermicelli, ours unfortunately only included cabbage and one lonely string of carrot. Paired with the sweet and gloopy sauce... we felt disrespected. On their appetizer menu, they list the number of pieces of each plate, perfect for a sharing table. Here they claim you get two spring rolls but they cut one in half. We felt disrespected. The rest of the meal was normal average/disappointing. But NOT without similar...
