Our family saves visits to Trey Yuen for special occasions since it is on the higher end of prices as far as Chinese food on the Northshore goes. Tonight was one of those nights but we ordered to-go since we were tired after coming home from the airport. We had a very simple order: combination egg foo young, combination lomein, and 2 orders of eggrolls. My husband also ordered a side of white rice. The young man that took our order over the phone said that the egg foo young COMES with a side of white rice, so did we want an EXTRA order of it since my husband just asked for white rice? My husband replied that if it came with it, no need to add an extra order of it. The young man said yes, it comes with it. So he then proceeds to read the order back to us. And he read it correctly....one combination lomein, one combination egg foo young with white rice, and 2 orders of egg rolls. Great, sounds good, we will be there in 25 minutes to pick it up. A different young man than the one that took our order over the phone walked the order out to us from the kitchen. He said he double checked the order and everything was there. I didn't question it because silly me assumed that 2 entrees and 2 sides was too simple to mess up. I get home and go to plate dinner for my family and shocker...there is NO white rice. I called to tell them that it was missing from the order and the person on the other end acted like it wasn't their problem. He went as far as to say "well, you weren't charged for white rice, so....." Actually, if it CAME with the egg foo young like we were told it did, then YES, we WERE charged for it. And if it didn't come with it, why were we talked out of ordering it on the side, which we would have gladly paid for? He said to come back and they would give me some rice. Sorry, I'm not driving all the way back there from Madisonville. By the time I did that and got back home, all the other food from the order would be cold. It may seem like a trivial thing to be bothered about, but we paid $70 for dinner and didn't get what we were supposed to. And the person that requested the egg foo young ONLY eats it over white rice, so that rendered that expensive entree useless to us unless I were to cook some rice myself, which defeated the entire point of ordering out....I was too tired to cook! I would probably be a little more understanding about the situation if the restaurant had been slammed, but it wasn't....there was literally only one table sat in the entire restaurant. So the error wasn't due to being stressed or overwhelmed from being super busy. It was literally DEAD in there which means the error was due to pure laziness. I also might not be as upset if the restaurant seemed genuinely apologetic instead of making it seem like it was MY fault. Or they could have even offered to refund a few bucks since part of my order was left off. But they didn't. It was just excuses and they made it clear they didn't care. People around here preach that everyone should support local business, and I do....I have been coming to Trey Yuen since I moved to Mandeville in 1988. But if this local business doesn't care enough to make sure customers that are spending their hard earned money receive what they have paid for, I will think long and hard...
Read moreTrey Yuen Needs a Food rescue! I've heard folks talk about Trey yuen being " top dragon " in the past, however our 2nd visit, the food just plainly sucks & it's quite possible I got food poisoning this time it ruined a perfectly good weekend + a work day. Appetizers: Egg rolls & pot stickers. The egg rolls taste like more cabbage was used vs pork/ shrimp..the sweet & sour sauce tasted old or has been re fridgerated so many times that it has gone bad. I did have another roll without sauce with entre but the egg roll is just bad. The stickers...since we are very familiar with the Chinese market ( love) in Metairie we could tell they were frozen & then quite possibly MICROWAVED!! It was rubbery & it's sauce was just too oily & bland. Entre: combo fried rice & 4 happiness dish. Rice was oversalted or to much soy sauce was used. ( I've done better combo rice at home) Do you even taste the food your making? Donkey!! The " 4 happiness " was overloaded with brown gravey so much so, you couldn't taste the vegetables, shrimp, chicken, & thin sliced beef on its own & that gravey was freaking bland. Thinking about it all pissis me off!! We cook better at home & for less, but I wanted to treat my wife & Granddaughter to an outing. Thank God my Granddaughter only had the " kids" chicken "! Cost with tip $100.00+ Service: it was good, not great though. I almost started laughing when the entre dish came out with a metal cover that neither fitted plate nor covered the food. My personal thoughts and opinions.: As usual a dead give away when a Chinese restaurant has gone down or has penny pincher mgmt or is to stubborn & stupid to know when to shut down & walk away is when they give you an overly abundance of rice. Maybe they take this hint or not. Regardless...

We stopped in for lunch. As we walked across the property from the parking lot, we noticed a koi pond and a few interesting stone statues. We entered through large, wooden doors and were greeted by the hostess. We were promptly seated and then were approached by our server. Our server was very professional, polite, and knowledgeable. After we ordered a few drinks and appetizers, the owner came over to our table. We had a nice conversation wherein he made a handful of recommendations among some very inspirational comments to my family. I was impressed about his comments about the locally sourced seafood. His visit made us feel welcomed.
The ambiance inside the restaurant was breathtaking. Each room had different woods and decorations. I could not stop looking around as the sun’s light was catching different structures around the dining room.
We ordered vegetable spring rolls and egg flower soup. The spring rolls were crispy and large - we probably could have split one roll between two people. The egg flower soup was delicious. The base of the soup had a complex, savory flavor.
For entrees, we orders Tong Cho tofu, fried rice, shrimp kew, lo mein, and children’s fried chicken. The portions were generous- especially the fried rice and lo mein. I could easily have made two meals from each item. The Tong Cho, as described by Mr. Wong, is based on their signature sauce. Paired with the tofu, it made for an interesting sweet and sour dish. The shrimp kew was my favorite part of the meal. The shrimp were large and plentiful. The vegetables were perfectly sautéed and seasoned. The sauce was light and complemented the dish nicely.
Overall, we really enjoyed our visit and...
