Avoid at all costs unless you like trash in your food! Yes, KITCHEN – TRASH – IN – MY – FOOD.
On Saturday 2/17, I ate at Aggieville Brewing Company with my wife and one other person. I ordered a BeerBQ Burger and fries. My wife ordered a cup of Beer Cheese Soup and a Black and Bleu Greens, and my cousin the Moro Street Tacos. After a reasonable wait the waitress told us our food was almost ready to come out. Then there was a very long wait before the food arrived which made us wonder if out food was sitting and waiting. We were right. When it arrived, the tacos were cold and the beer cheese was congealed and cold. The beer cheese went back but my cousin was willing to put up with the tacos. At least the burger was warm, although the fries were limp and greasy.
About half-way through eating the burger I felt something in my mouth and pulled out a piece of soft plastic wrapping about 1.5" long and 0.4" wide. I had almost swallowed it and am concerned that I may have eaten other trash without knowing it. I’ll confess I was pretty angry as I had not realized I was paying extra for ADULTERATED food. I brought the plastic to the manager, who seemed overwhelmed, and she immediately comped our meal. Good move on her part as at that point, there was no way I was going to pay for anything in that restaurant. I was so angry I rounded up everyone, leaving three meals half eaten (or less) and half a beer on the table, and left the restaurant. My only regret was not loudly announcing what had happened to the rest of the patrons. All the way home I was belching and feeling nauseous. Did I mention there was KITCHEN – TRASH – IN – MY – FOOD?
It would be easy to blame the staff but this is indicative of a much larger problem with the management and how they have organized and trained the kitchen staff. There should be no opportunity for trash to be in the final food assembly and plating area. If I were the owners, I would get rid of the manager and replace her with someone competent who knows how to run a kitchen. Or maybe it was the owners who set it up. In which case, I think this is another restaurant that needs to close.
Manhattan desperately needs non-fast food restaurants, so we were excited to hear that ABC had opened. I was disappointed to see the interior as it looks like there was no effort put into it. But I have eaten in some real dives that had great food so that’s not a show stopper. We had to reposition at our table as the setting sun was coming in the large windows and there were no blinds to block it. The interior reminded me more of a bait shop than a restaurant. All they need is a singing Billy Bass on the wall. But I guess the lack of effort extended to the food and the service. Deserves...
Read moreThe food was good, I had the brisket basket. Advertised as juicy on the menu. I think it had been in the hot hold way too long. Taste was good, but you wanted a little bit of fat in the bite otherwise it was too dry. It had a fair smoke ring but wasn't a lot of smoked taste or any bark on the meat. Ok, but $20 for four slices of brisket it could and should have been better.
The jalapeno corn bread was tasty, served with no butter once again dry. Could have been a bit of honey or butter or jam to assist the tiny muffin. In an upscale joint like this I expect to at least see something the size of a regular muffin.
Potato salad, I don't mind a bit of mustard in the potato salad but this was a bit too much and they could have cut the dill in half, but again you know there is a lot of difference in family recipes. I can say that this won't be a side that I order again. The potato slices with cheese and bacon on them were very good. Good texture and a great taste.
Overall it was a pretty good meal, but it could have been so much better. I'm pretty touchy about brisket being overly dry. When I eat brisket and I have to take a drink after each mouthful in order to assist in swallowing, it's just been held too long or cooked too long.
Now for the bad part. I was warned the day before to take ear plugs with me. I didn't understand the recommendation. On arriving it was clear that even coming through the vestibule it was going to be loud. We had planned to eat outside but the threat of rain forced us inside into the small side room. Do not under any circumstances allow them to seat you in this side room. It is an echo chamber. The noise level was unbelievable for the amount of people in the room. I would recommend they immediately hang tapestries or wallpaper over these walls and/or some other sound attenuating means. The food was good enough for me to come back and try other things on the menu. But I will not sit in this room My family who came from quite a distance to visit was almost impossible to understand across the table. We couldn't understand the waitress and I think it was mutual because she couldn't understand us. There was a lot of repeat sentences to get the point across.
So overall positive I'd go back and try other things. I'm not a beer drinker anymore so the draw for brew is not anything that makes a difference with me. The others is in my party seem to enjoy their beverages though.
The staff was running with about half the house full and I would have to say we did not have the attention we deserved and needed. We had a late arriving couple to our party and we had a hard time flagging down any help so they...
