Marshall Diner is about as random as it gets if you don't live in Marshall Virginia. Me and a couple friends, who don't live in the area, visited on a whim because we were hungry and wanted something unique.
We were not disappointed.
The restaurant itself is a little unsightly from the outside. It's located in a small, somewhat dingy shopping center (I use that term loosely because there were only like two other stores adjacent to the diner). We also had to park in the grass off to the side because the "parking lot" consisted of about 10 spots.
However, once we walked inside we were immediately greeted by an employee and told to "sit wherever we wanted."
The interior of the restaurant isn't what you would expect from an establishment that calls itself a diner. It didn't have the "vintage" feel. Rather, it sort of felt like an older Italian restaurant or pizza place.
We arrived a little after noon on a Saturday and the restaurant had maybe 3-4 other groups in it, most of whom seemed like locals. Since there weren't many other people in the diner our waiter came to us and took our drink order almost immediately. She was absolutely wonderful. Very accommodating and kind to our group.
A couple of minutes later we ordered our food. The menu is exactly what you would expect from a diner in Marshall, VA. It had hearty breakfast food, sandwiches, salads, hamburgers and more; great for a big party or family with varying tastes.
The food itself was fantastic. I ordered the pancake breakfast which consisted of 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 4 strips of bacon and home fries. It was big meal, but also cost me a little over $10, which seemed a little bit expensive. That said, everything was delicious. You could tell it was made fresh and, though it was greasy and full of calories I'm sure, it was satisfying and you can't ask for more than that.
Overall, I really like this place. Probably not something I would drive more than 10-20 minutes to get to, but if you're in the area and looking for a unique, enjoyable bite, it's definitely the...
Read moreDecided to go here for brunch with my son. I ordered breakfast and he ordered lunch. When our plates were brought to the table, my son asked our server to please bring him some ketchup for his french fries, which never happened. We sat there for 20+ minutes eating our meal, and another 10-15 minutes after eating and were never offered a refill on our drinks, asked if we needed or wanted anything else, etc. This was despite making eye contact with them multiple times, and even at one point motioning to them with my hands up like “HELLO??”.
There was only one server (she has been there for years and is a great waitress) that was diligently working and doing her job while we were there. While two others were sitting at a table looking at their phones. The few times one of them had to get up to seat someone who had arrived, or take an order to a table that was ready, you could clearly get the vibe by their eye-rolling and body language that it seemed like it was some sort of chore to them to do their jobs.
I’ve eaten at this establishment at least 15 to 20 times in the last 6 years and today will be my last. Food is good, but in recent visits have seen a noticeable decrease in portion size, despite increasing prices. Try hiring people who want to serve customers and take some pride in what they’re doing. Having your employee’s sitting openly out in front of customers that are not getting the level of service they should, staring at their phones like they have no work to do is not a good look.
All I can say is you must be paying them an awfully good hourly wage, as with the level of service I witnessed today, they definitely must not be too concerned about getting...
Read moreI came in and ordered the meatloaf, it was my first time there and I wasn’t sure what to order. I meant to go to the Silver Diner but my GPS messed up and brought me here. I was going to the drive-in in Stephens City and had no choice but to get something there since I was short on time. I was old by a customer and the workers that the meatloaf was the best. When I finally settled in and started eating (30 minutes later) the food was not up to my expectations. It tasted like someone had already chewed it then put it back together. It was soggy and wet if that makes sense. I called and talked to the owner, Mohammed and he told me I could have to come there in person for a refund. I told him I lived 1.5 hours always and would be in there the next time. I took a picture of the food and offered to text or email it. I also offered to freeze the food till I could make it there next and was told to throw it away because it wasn’t necessarily. I called today, about 3 weeks after because I’ll be at the drive-in tomorrow. He told me I couldn’t get a refund but could have something else made for me. That’s not what we agreed on and no offense but I don’t want anything from your restaurant. I’ll be filing a claim with my bank to get my money back. It’s the fact that he could admit he initially offered a refund but is now changing his mind because he said it’s been over a month. You couldn’t pay me to eat at your restaurant again, I’m so sorry. Maybe it was a fluke and I got a bad serving, I don’t think waiting 30 minutes to eat should make the food inedible and I really don’t want to have to...
